The general health of the animal is not generally affected. However, certain side effects of the hives can cause secondary problems. If extremely itchy, the dog can traumatize itself by scratching and licking.

In general, it would be a good idea to start some oral Benadryl and see your DVM. The Benadryl cannot treat hives that are already there, but will help to prevent further hives from forming. From a medical standpoint, there is no way of telling if an allergic reaction will lead to a swelling of the airway. While very rare, this throat swelling is very dangerous and must be addressed at once.

There is no mandatory retirement age. It depends on the type of work the dog does for the individual. For instance, a dog that works with a power wheelchair will have a longer working life than one that physically pulls a manual wheelchair. You need to bath either coated dog about once a month. Depending on the thickness of the long coat, you will have to brush them too. I brush Sonja once a week for instance, and only brush T Kis about once every 4 months, and she hardly has any knots. They only need to be brushed, and do not need to have their hair trimed like other long coat breeds do. You can do it all at home in 5 minutes.
