Experts believe that the rapid forward and backward head movement that occurs during violent shaking, throwing, or slamming against an object causes a baby's brain to shear and forcefully collide with the skull. This movement can tear blood vessels in a baby's brain, causing bleeding and swelling of surrounding tissue. Nerve cells may die from being stretched or sheared. Bleeding into and around the retina in the eyes can also occur.

Single brief seizures do not cause brain damage. Although tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizures, lasting longer than 20 minutes may injure the brain, there is no evidence that shorter seizures, lasting less than 20 minutes, cause permanent injury to the brain.

The causes of brain tumors are not known. Brain tumors are not contagious. They can occur at any age, although they are most common in children 3-12 years old and adults 40-70 years old. Risk factors include working in industries such as oil refining, rubber manufacturing and drug manufacturing; other studies show chemists and embalmers have higher incidence of brain tumors. Researchers also are looking at exposure to viruses as a possible cause.

The most common causes of TBI are motor vehicle crashes and falls, but TBIs can occur when a person's head is hit with a sudden outside force. The brain can be injured when a trauma forces the head forward or sideways violently. The force of the trauma can cause the brain to slam into the skull which can cause internal tears and bleeding. In infancy to early childhood, falls and motor vehicle accidents are the most frequent causes of brain injuries.

When there is a direct blow to the head, the bruising of the brain and the damage to the internal tissue and blood vessels is due to a mechanism called coup-countercoup. A bruise directly related to trauma at the site of impact is called a coup lesion (pronounced COO). As the brain jolts backwards, it can hit the skull on the opposite side and cause a bruise called a countercoup lesion.

In general, seizures do not cause permanent brain damage. The brain has an amazing amount of unused capacity and even if cells are damaged during a seizure, your dog should have the ability to relearn. If your dog has had a cluster of severe seizures you may notice some changes in their behavior, but these should be temporary. Most dogs fully recover from seizures in a few days but for some it may take a few weeks.

The available evidence speaks strongly against this possibility. Patients receiving ECT show no elevation of brain enzymes and proteins that are released into the bloodstream when brain damage occurs, such as after a stroke. Carefully-controlled animal studies have shown no evidence of brain damage from brief seizures as given with ECT, and sensitive brain-imaging studies performed months after ECT have shown no structural changes.

Most people with head injuries have extensive DIFFUSE INJURY which involves many parts of the brain. Certain tests such as the CT scan, EEG and BSER provide some information about the extent of the injury. However, in the final analysis, it is the FUNCTION of the brain in thinking, speaking and moving which provides the most useful information about the extent of the damage.

Approximately one half (48%) of all Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) cases are caused by motor vehicle accidents. However, in urban areas, which tend to have higher rates of crime, assaults make up a greater percentage of TBI cases, in some surveys as much as 40%.

An inhibitory neurotransmitter, gamma aminobutyricacid (GABA) works in these areas to diminish this excessive nerve cell activity. There is evidence that benzodiazepines cause an increase in the activity of GABA, thereby returning the system to a normal level and reducing the associated symptoms of anxiety.

Lithium can cause DI in either of two ways. The most common is damage to the part of the kidney that is normally responsible for controlling urine output. This form of lithium-induced DI is called nephrogenic DI. Depending on how long the problem has been present, it may or may not be corrected by stopping the lithium. If it cannot be corrected by stopping lithium, it may be partially controlled by treatment with amiloride or thiazide diuretics as well as a low-sodium diet.

The original pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine was made from killed bacteria and was sometimes blamed for causing brain damage in infants and young children. Many studies on the pertussis vaccine have been conducted and there has been no proof that it caused brain damage. In 1997 a new version of the vaccine called acellular pertussis was introduced in Canada.

Vasopressin is made and stored in the same large neurons of the posterior pituitary. The pituitary stalk through which these neurons pass on their way from the hypothalamus can be severed by trauma, surgery, or disease but when it is severed the neurons die. I know of no relation between DI and narcolepsy.
