A wireless network adapter, typically in the form of a PCMCIA card. However, many current laptops have wireless network adapters built into them now.

Many brands of wireless network adapters are available. Though we do not specify a brand, the adapter you choose must be 802.11b compliant. That is to say it must support the 802.11b wireless network standard. Check packaging carefully if you are buying a new device. Otherwise, check the documentation that came with your current device to be sure it complies.

A wireless network adapter is a device that connects to a computer that converts a computer's network data to a wireless transmission medium.

Drexel recommends an internal wireless 802.11a/b/g compliant Wi-Fi adapter. If you have an older notebook, you can also add an external wireless ethernet card. If an external card is opted, make sure it has security encryption capability. External cards can be ordered online or at many computer stores.

We recommend WiFire, http://www.hfield.com/kiz/, but there are many great devices on the market that will work. The device needs to support the IEEE 802.11b and/or 802.11g standard. That's normal WIFI stuff, so everything you see should be compliant. You might look for a network adapter that attaches to a USB port. It makes installation quite easy for either a laptop or a desktop. Another option would be to purchase a combination network adapter/wireless extender.

To access the wireless network an IEEE 802.11b compliant wireless network adapter is required. These types of wireless network adapters are available at any computer retail store. Some cell phones may operate near the same radio frequency as the wireless network adapters which can cause interference and lead to a poor wireless connection. Wireless network adapters operating in close proximity may also generate interference and lead to a poor wireless connection.

The network or wireless PC Card provided with the Air2Data kit is called a PCMCIA Card or PC Card. Almost all laptops have one or more PC Card slots. Some laptop manufacturers place a plastic cover over these slots. Often you must remove the plastic cover by using the adjacent eject button or latch. Yes, connecting to the wireless network in the H.R. Bright building is no different than connecting to other campus wireless access points. You will need to connect to the TAMU VPN to gain access. If you need access to the network or any systems in the Computer Science Department, you can connect to the C.S. VPN server (vpn.cs.tamu.edu) Students may connect using either the Cisco VPN client or the Windows VPN client. The configuration is the same as connecting to the campus vpn.

We have engineered the campus wireless network to recognize those with a valid SUNY Oswego computer account. The first time you connect to the campus wireless network, you'll go to a special registration page that allows you to download the necessary software (a VPN client) that's already configured to work with our wireless network. Most laptop computers purchased in the last year already have a wireless network card that should be able to access the wireless network. There is a list of tested wireless cards that can be found here for guest access and here for student access. Also check the certified product listing at the Wi-Fi Alliance web site, www.wifi.org, to see if your wireless network card is compatible with the 802.11b/g standard.

There are 6 public printers in the department. You should use IPP printing to connect to the server ipp://printhost.math.duke.edu with queue name /printers/lw0 for example.

Students must register their laptop and wireless network card with the Help Desk by filling out a Laptop Registration and Use Agreement Form. The MAC address of your wireless NIC will be bound to your login account. Should you need to change your wireless NIC, you must visit the help desk and register the new network card. Limit the number of DHCP addresses to the number of wireless access points that you will be using. Optionally, set static IP addresses, set to non-standard network blocks.
