Yes, General education support courses should be taken prior to acceptance into the program if at all possible. Students may benefit by completing support courses prior to entering the program, as the time requirements of the program are considerable. The course schedule outlining both nursing and non-nursing courses is located in the TMCC 2007-2008 course catalog or the 2008-2009 Course Catalog.

Students are strongly encouraged to take as many, if not all, of the non-nursing classes required for completion of the nursing degree before beginning the nursing program. The fewer non-nursing classes students have to take concurrently with the nursing curriculum the greater the opportunity for success. HOWEVER, TAKING ONLY THE NURSING COURSES REQUIRED EACH TERM CONSTITUTES LESS THAN THE 12 CREDITS CONSIDERED FULL-TIME FOR FINANCIAL AID.

It is important to first work to complete the prerequisite courses required by the community college from which you are seeking admission. An advisor from that community college nursing program is the best one to guide you in selecting prerequisite courses. Once your pre-reqs are completed for the Associate Degree program, you can begin to complete prerequisites for UW’s RN/BSN program. A LEAP Advisor can assist you in planning coursework.

We do permit non-degree candidates, on a limited basis, to enroll in some of our classes. By providing a range of courses, we have the ability to enroll people who are considering the program or who simply want to take a specialized course. Often this brings into the classroom individuals who share valuable knowledge with degree candidates.

The prerequisite courses (BIOL 2401, BIOL 2402) must be taken prior to the start of the program. While not required, any of the non-nursing courses may be taken before beginning the nursing program, and students who complete these courses are able to compete more effectively for admission. Many students who have work or family responsibilities find it helpful to have as many of the non-nursing courses as possible completed before beginning the program.

If you wish to earn the certificate, you must complete the application forms. If you wish to take one or more courses without earning the certificate, you may register for any course without being accepted into the certificate program. Yes, you should take the general education and program (core) courses. These are the non-nursing courses, which include any required course that does not have the NURS code in front of the course name. In addition, applicants are required to take the TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) test. Applicants must have two years of experience as a registered nurse, including at least one year of recent, full-time experience in an intensive care setting. For the class which began in the Fall of 2005 there were 200 qualified applicants. There were 86 students admitted with an average retention GPA of 3.40 and an average science GPA of 3.44. For the Spring of 2007, there will be 40 students admitted, and in subsequent semesters (Fall and Spring) there will be 60 students admitted to the Nursing program each semester.

Eligibility for transfer credit and/or advanced placement is determined on an individual basis. You will need to contact the Program Director for specific information. All nursing courses must have been taken within the last five years.

The number of students admitted each semester is dependant on the availability of clinical placement. This may change each semester. Typically, we have enough space to admit 14 to 25 students each fall and spring.

Yes, but there are restrictions for financial aid received from OHSU. RNBS students are limited to taking degree-applicable courses from four year “partner” institutions (for example SOU, OSU, PSU, EOU) in order to receive financial aid from OHSU to cover tuition for non-nursing courses. In addition, paperwork must be submitted prior to and at the end of the term in which the aid is to be received. Talk to the Financial Aid Office for details.

We have no requirement regarding how recently students must have completed the required courses. Content of these courses will not be covered in detail during the nursing courses, so students may need to review certain aspects of the material covered in these courses. Available textbooks make this possible for each student.

Comm 180, 201, and 202 are the only required Commerce courses before admission. The College of Law admits students only for the fall term, with a deadline each year of March 15th.
