EPA's Design for the Environment (DfE) Program is a voluntary initiative that forges partnerships with a variety of industries, including drycleaning, printing, and the electronics industry, in an effort to encourage the design of safer processes and products by eliminating or minimizing pollution. The overall mission of DfE is to prevent pollution in ways that allow businesses to remain successful.

The EPA promulgated Criteria for Municipal Solid Waste Landfills (40 CFR Part 258) under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) on October 9, 1991. The criteria contain location restrictions, design and operating standards, groundwater monitoring requirements, corrective actions, financial assurance requirements, landfill gas migration control, closure requirements, and post closure requirements.

Over the last 20 years, EPA has aggressively looked for ways to reduce and control dioxins in all environmental media in the United States. Collectively, these actions have resulted in strict controls on all of the known and quantifiable major industrial sources of dioxin releases. As a result of EPA's efforts, along with efforts by state government and private industry, known and quantifiable industrial emissions in the United States have been reduced by more than 90% from 1987 levels.

Under SNAP, EPA is evaluating substitute chemicals and alternative technologies that companies want to use in place of the ozone-depleting substances, to ensure that they won't cause greater damage to human health and the environment than the ozone depleters that are being replaced or other alternatives that are available. Based on this evaluation, EPA maintains a list of acceptable substitutes and a list of unacceptable substitutes.

Climate Leaders is an EPA industry–government partnership that works with companies to develop long–term comprehensive climate change strategies. Partners set a corporate–wide greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goal and inventory their emissions to measure progress. By reporting inventory data to EPA, Partners create a lasting record of their accomplishments.

This project is strictly complementary to ENERGY STAR. It is not an ENERGY STAR project, but we are working closely to ensure that the program and project enhance each other. US EPA does not have, or plan to have, a certification program for electronic recyclers. The U.S military is very sensitive to environmental concerns and has an excellent track record in protecting the environment. It has very high environmental standards and works extremely hard to reduce any kind of pollution. American rules of waste disposal, for instance, are stricter than local laws. The Systems Design Engineering department fosters a community feeling. For the first two years of study, students in the program take the same courses and their classes are mostly in one corridor of the Engineering II building. I use either Macromedia Freehand or Adobe Illustrator on my Macintosh computer. These are full-featured drawing programs used by commercial artists.
