Depression is one of the more common symptoms of PMDD. Women often feel sad, blue, unhappy, down in the dumps, and/or hopeless as part of the PMDD symptom complex. But remember, the depressive symptoms of PMDD are linked to the menstrual cycle and must be absent at least during the week following menses. Also, depression is not necessary for the diagnosis of PMDD.

These are two hormones produced by a woman's ovaries. Together, the rise and fall of these two hormones help prepare your body for pregnancy or bring about your menstrual cycle. For women with PMDD, these hormonal changes can trigger severe emotional and physical symptoms.

In many ways. Depression can be mistaken for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and depression often occurs with AD. depressive symptoms can mimic dementia symptoms, depression is sometimes confused with dementia. Depression can interfere with memory, thinking and ability to concentrate, causing what is sometimes called pseudodementia. Effective treatment of depression will normalize these impairments.

Premenstrual symptoms can begin anytime after a woman begins to menstruate and, on average, menstruation begins at around 12 ½ years of age in the U.S. Women tend to seek treatment for premenstrual symptoms in their late twenties and early to mid-thirties, so it is difficult to know exactly when milder premenstrual symptoms actually become severe enough to be considered PMDD. Even though PMDD is usually first diagnosed after adolescence, it can certainly occur in teenagers.

Genetics may play a role in PMDD. Studies have shown that identical twins are more likely to share the disorder (93%) than non-identical (fraternal) twins (44%), and daughters of mothers with PMDD are more likely to have it themselves. However, no specific genes have been identified to account for PMDD. It is best to simply say that genetics may put a woman at greater risk for developing the disorder.

Below are answers to some questions that I am frequently asked. Remember, these answers are my own opinion on these matters (and I can be very opinionated).

Ideally, the ideas of reinforcement learning could constitute part of a computational theory of what the brain is doing and why. Formally, RL is unrelated to behaviorism, or at least to the aspects of behaviorism that are widely viewed as undesireable. Behaviorism has been disparaged for focusing exclusively on behavior, refusing to consider what was going on inside the head of the subject. RL of course is all about the algorithms and processes going on inside the agent. For example, we often consider the construction of internal models of the environment within the agent, which is far outside the scope of behaviorism.

Melatonin levels decrease with age and this deficit may play an important role in the high frequency of insomnia among elderly people. A disruption in the normal sleep-wake cycle caused by shift work, jet lag, stress, or other factors can also trigger abnormal levels. Percolation is an arrangement of parts (usually visualised as a matrix) such that a property can arise that connects the opposite sides of the structure. This can be regarded as making a path in a disconnected matrix or making an obstruction in a fully connected one. The boundary at which the system goes from disconnected to connected is a sudden one, a step or phase change in the properties of the system.

In nonlinear studies we find much structure for very simple systems, as seen in the self-similar structure of fractals and the bifurcation structure seen in the logistic map. This form of system exhibits complex behaviour from simple rules. In contrast, for self-organizing systems we have complex assemblies generating simple emergent behaviour, so in essence the two concepts are complementary.

How long the mood lasts: A bad mood is usually gone in a few days, but depression lasts for two weeks or longer. How much it interferes with your life. A bad mood does not keep you from going to work or school or spending time with friends. Depression can keep you from doing these things and may even make it difficult to get out of bed.

There are several categories of drugs for the treatment of Parkinson's, and it is thought that there may be a connection between some dopamine agonists (one class of drugs that can be used to treat Parkinson's) and the incidence of compulsive behaviour. However, clinical studies have shown this to be an uncommon side effect currently estimated to occur in up to 14% of people taking dopamine agonists.

To a first approximation, Reinforcement Learning and Neuro-Dynamic Programming are synonomous. The name "reinforcement learning" came from psychology (although psychologists rarely use exactly this term) and dates back to the eary days of cybernetics. For example, Marvin Minsky used this term in his 1954 thesis, and Barto and Sutton revived it in the early 1980's.

Broadly speaking, RL works as a pretty good model of instrumental learning, though a detailed argument for this has never been publically made (the closest to this is probably Barto, Sutton and Watkins, 1990). On the other hand, the links between classical (or Pavlovian) conditioning and temporal-difference (TD) learning (one of the central elements of RL) are close and widely acknowledged (see Sutton and Barto, 1990).

Most work with genetic algorithms simulates evolution, not learning during an individual's life, and because of this is very different from work in RL. That having been said, there are two provisos. First, there is a large body of work on classifier systems that uses or is closely related to genetic algorithms. This work is concerned with learning during a single agent's lifetime (using GAs to organize the components of the agent's mind) and is in fact RL research.

Yes and no. The name, PMDD, is relatively new but descriptions of the condition extend back to the days of the Greek physician, Hippocrates (460-377 B.C.) who commented on women with suicidal thoughts and other severe premenstrual symptoms. The term premenstrual tension first appeared in 1931 and later evolved into the more familiar name -- premenstrual syndrome or PMS.

While PMDD can cause unpleasant, uncomfortable and even distressing symptoms and be quite disruptive to a woman's life, there is no evidence that women with PMDD are at higher risk for developing physical illnesses such as cancer, high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease and the like.
