If neither your X server nor your X font server supports you can try one of the TruType font servers: xfstt (http://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/X11/fonts/) or xfsft (http://www.dcs.ed.ac.uk/home/jec/programs/xfsft/ .

Open the "Fonts" control panel, and click "Add". Then, look for the font files (extension *.TTF) where you copied or unpacked them. Select them, and click OK. You may install several fonts at the same time, simply by selecting them. Windows 95 requires a slightly different procedure. Open the "Fonts" folder you will find in the Control Panel located within "My Computer" icon. Then, simply copy the TrueType font into it. This type of file is generated by Windows 3.xx when a new font is installed.

If you're using the TEXT option in MasterWorks, there is a check box option on the TEXT PROPERTY box labeled "TTF". Check that box if you want MasterWorks to display your system TrueType fonts. You can then select and create lettering from those TrueType fonts found on your system. You may also digitize TrueType fonts yourself by using the File > Import TTF option to bring the text into MasterWorks as artwork segments. Most people naturally associate TrueType fonts with text. Arial, Courier New and Times New Roman are all examples of standard TrueType fonts containing text. There is, however, another standard TrueType font called Wingdings that contains symbols instead of text. Typing ‘abc’ produces symbols rather than text. Linux Xprt build from http://xprint.mozdev.org/'s source supports TrueType fonts out-of-the-box (starting with the 008 development tree; xprint.mozdev.org's releases <= 007 do not support TrueType fonts) and and does not require any special actions. Sun's Xprt on Solaris (/usr/openwin/bin/Xprt) has TrueType font support out-of-the-box and does not require any special actions.

Many sources will tell you that TrueType fonts—a technology developed by Apple Computer in partnership with Microsoft—are buggy and unstable, and indeed, some are. But in our experience, the problems are isolated to a few bad apples (no pun intended) that we rarely see. We always try to accommodate our customers' files as best we can. Postscript fonts consist of two files, a screen font and a printer font. As it is used today it is a format developed by Adobe and adopted by other font foundries. In most cases you need Adobe Type Manager to use Postscript fonts effectively. TrueType fonts consist of a single file which contains both the screen and printer versions of the font.

Your PSW 2.00a as it is now, without the Option, digitizes TT fonts in the lettering part of the software with a Complex Fill step satin or satin stitch. With Complex Fill stitches, you only have one stitch inclination. With step satin fills, this may give an adequate finished result, but usually not as pleasing as the built-in fonts. With Satin fill stitches you can have very long stitches, which are easy to catch and snag.

Adobe PostScript® Type 1 is a worldwide standard for digital type fonts (International Standards Organization outline font standard, ISO 9541). It was first developed by Adobe Systems for use in PostScript printers. Although Adobe is a leader in the design and manufacturing of Type 1 software and maintains the standards for Type 1, hundreds of companies around the world have designed and released more than 30,000 fonts in the Type 1 format.

When printing the same document to both a 300 dpi device and a 100 or 200 dpi device, you may frequently see a difference in font size. Though the fonts are scaleable, the scaling will only be to the nearest dot. A TrueType character rendered to 37 pixels tall on a 300 dpi DeskJet, will be 24.7 pixels tall to be the same size on a 200 dpi fax. Since only an integral number of pixels can be used, 24.7 must be rounded to either 24 or 25 pixels.

Most fonts downloaded from the web come packaged in an archive file, usually ZIP for Windows or SIT for Mac. So the first step is to open the archive and extract the font(s). Windows Millenium and Windows XP can handle ZIP archives natively. Right click the ZIP file and choose Extract All. Follow the Extraction Wizard to extract the files into the folder of your choice. All other versions of Windows require a third-party application to handle ZIP archives.

Regular fonts are designed primarily to be printed at high resolution. Pixel fonts are designed at low resolution especially for screen display. When you view a regular font on the screen, you are seeing an approximation of what will appear on a printed page and it is usually compromised because of the screen's relatively low resolution.

PostScript fonts come with the extension *.PFB and *.PFM, one of each for each font. Rcent versions of Windows, such as Windows 2000 and XP directly support ATM fonts. In order to use them with previous versions, , you first must install Adobe Type Manager (ATM) for Windows. Then, copy *.PFB files in the WINDOWS\PSFONTS directory, and the *.PFM in the WINDOWS\PSFONTS\PFM directory. Then, use the ATM control panel to install the fonts.

The problem is a file filter setting within CorelDraw and how it is interpreting the file you're trying to import. You are probably selecting the encapsulated postscript (.eps) filter to open our .eps files. To remedy this problem, slect the Adobe Illustrator (.ai) filter to open our file or select no filter at all. If you're still having problems, you will need to change your filter settings within CorelDraw itself. The next question deals with this issue.

You may install these fonts in the Windows fonts directory (as you would install any Windows font), although for easier font management, we recommend using the free utility Adobe ATM Lite. You may download this software from the Adobe website.

Answer: Windows can comfortably handle up to 1000 fonts in its fonts directory. However, having that many fonts installed can bog down some older (slower) computers and is difficult to manage. Imagine trying to find a font amongst 1000 fonts!

TrueType fonts have to be printed as graphics which means that a lot of data needs to be sent to the printer. Current serial and parallel ports have a limited speed which means that the printer will often have to stop and wait until it has received a complete line of data. Our drivers contain some 'resident' fonts which use the font that is built-in to the printer.

LogicWorks uses TrueType fonts for all text display and for printing because TrueType fonts can be rotated. Follow the directions in the error message to install and enable the use of TrueType fonts. If you have followed the directions in the error message and are still getting the error then TrueType fonts are not the problem. In a few, rare, cases the root of the problem has been identified as a corrupted system file and was solved by re-installing Windows or Windows 95.

If your document contains a 2-byte TrueType font with the same name as a Type 1 font resident on the printer, QuarkXPress will access the font on the printer when printing. Any glyphs will print at the resolution determined by the printer. NOTE: Your text may reflow when this substitution occurs if the font metrics of the Type 1 font are different than the metrics of the TrueType font.

Make sure that in the PC Setup (BIOS) that your Parallel Port (LPTx) is set to a Standard Centronics/Parallel Port. If you don't have a selection for Standard make sure that you do NOT have it set to ECP or EPP. Our ports are standard Parallel/Centronics Ports. If you have any devices, such as a switch box or a software key in-between the printer and the PC, do the following: turn all of your equipment off, disconnect these devices, turn everything back on and then try again.
