Researching your project should begin as soon as possible. Materials not available at the library are often obtainable through Interlibrary Loan. However, the time it takes to receive material through this system may vary from two to five weeks. If most of your research will involve material not in the Bard collection, you should plan to spend time at another library facility. A letter of introduction should be requested from the Stevenson Library for research purposes at other libraries.

Library staff will attempt to obtain copyright permission on any material submitted. Materials will not be posted to electronic reserve unless they comply with copyright law. The general rules for copyright permission are as follows. Fair use allows a one time posting of materials as long as they comprise less than 10% of an entire work, one article from an issue of a journal, or 1 poem under 250 words.

Library reserve staff needs a clean 8 1/2 x 11 photocopy of the material the first time it is used. The library can do photocopying but charges .10 per page. Materials being submitted for electronic reserve must be accompanied by a signed request form with complete bibliographic citations for each item being posted. Shortly after leaving the White House, Jimmy Carter donated to the U.S. Government all of his Presidential historical materials including the files of his White House staff. The library has added, and continues to acquire, important additional collections to supplement and enhance these core research holdings. U.S. government domestic and foreign policies and national political affairs in the last half of the 1970s are the primary topics of library collections.

The Library contains 13,000+ volumes of fiction, non-fiction, large print, reference and children's books. All books, magazines, catalogs, and equipment are sent to a reader through the U.S. Postal Service as "Free Matter for the Blind" and may be returned the same way. There is no postage fee for returning the materials. Materials sent by a network library come with a removable address card that, when turned over and reinserted, will show the library's name and address for return mailing.

There is no one resource which lists all of the Library's holdings. Most of the Library's books, journals, and microforms from 1968 to the present are listed in the Library of Congress Online Catalog. The online catalog also has partial listings of some of the Library's non-book collections (e.g. manuscripts, sound recordings, sheet music), and partial listings of pre-1968 books, journals and microforms. The library has an interlibrary loan department that is staffed by a part time person. You may either ask for something we don't own in person or you may send an e-mail request following the prompts from the library's catalog. There is a place to indicate the last date needed for an item if you have a deadline. However, you need to plan a minimum of two weeks to get any materials through the interlibrary loan process.

You may return your library books and videos at the Rio Library Circulation Desk, or at the drop box which is located in the parking lot of the Rio Salado College Tempe site. In addition to being the College's academic library, the CARL is also the Post and Children's libraries. The CARL provides materials and services to the Fort Leavenworth community residents to support their informational, educational, professional, and recreational needs.

For books and magazines, the library provides a three-day grace period. Materials not returned within the grace period are fined 10 cents per day. Fines begin with the due date. Although both activities are located in the same department they are distinctively different services. Inliterlibrary Loan (ILL) is when the Biomedical Library gets materials for its patron's that the library does not own. Document Delivery (DD) is when the Biomedical Library sends its own materials to its users. Both services can include journal articles and books.

NIH identification cards are issued to eligible NIH employees. To check out materials from the NIH Library, you will need to obtain a barcode from the Circulation Desk at the NIH Library.

The Library of Congress completes bibliographic cataloging for materials that are collected by LC which provides for the identification, description, and access to items in the collections. All types of materials in the Library of Congress' collections are cataloged, covering hundreds of different languages and virtually every format.
