They are used as reference points for the video cameras. Using them we can get the geometry of the image. This takes a horizontal image and makes it vertical, creating an aerial map of the beach.

Hurricane Isabel in 2003 caused waves to wash out parts of highway 12 all over the Outer Banks, and created a small series of inlets on Hatteras Island. It was the most powerful storm to hit the Outer Banks since the pier opened in 1977.

Disk Groups help you organize Dynamic Disks and help to prevent data loss. Windows 2000 allows only one Disk Group per computer (this may change). Disk Groups can organize storage when you use Veritas LDM-Pro. A Disk Group uses a name consisting of the computer name plus a suffix of Dg0. If you use LDM-Pro, the suffix can be incremental, such as Dg1 or Dg2. To view the name of your disk group, see the following registry entry:

Neither ProDOS nor DOS 3.3 includes a built-in Disk Copy command. So, to copy diskettes you will need to use some kind of copy utility. The ProDOS standard Utilities Disk includes a Disk Copy option. The DOS 3.3 System Master disk includes a Disk Copy program named "COPYA". A very good Disk Copy utility for 5.25" (DOS 3.3, ProDOS, ...) diskettes is Disk Muncher.

The Miniature Schnauzer was developed to be an identical version of the Standard Schnauzer. The Standard Schnauzer has never come in the white color. Our history of the evolvement of the breed indicate that there probably were introductions of other breeds to reduce the size of the original breed. The originators of the breed recommended not breeding the whites and parti-colors that appeared. This was to preserve the breed as it was intended.

We don???t yet know. To date there is no accurate process to date sand. Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating may provide us with some clues, but so far the results at Great Sand Dunes are very inconclusive. The OSL process determines how much time has passed since quartz crystals were last exposed to sunlight. As we currently understand it, the dunes are probably thousands of years old, not millions, and may date to when Lake Alamosa disappeared.

Sand surface temperatures can reach over 140° F on summer afternoons, so be sure to take boots or tennis shoes (sandals are not adequate) when hiking on the dunes. When storms approach, come down off the dunes as lightning will often strike the dune mass. When lightning hits the sand, it fuses or melts particles of sand together, resulting in a ???fulgurite??? (latin for lightning rock). Fulgurites, like all natural objects in the park, are protected and should be left for others to view.

There is broad acceptance among health care professionals and the public of the recommendation that the pain from herniated discs be initially treated conservatively. That is, as long as there are no signs (such as severe pain, numbness, or functional impairment from nerve involvement) of the need for more invasive treatment, two or three months of chiropractic care may be the best choice before considering to spinal surgery or shots of analgesics (painkillers) in your back.

Neck pain with intermittent numbness and pain in the arms suggest a nerve compression symdrome in the neck which could be a herniated disc. Sometimes the level ca be located by the pattern of the pain and numbness. If the pain is to the thumb side of your hand, it is probably the C5-6 level. If it is to the long finger of your band, it is probably the C6-7 level and if it is to the little finger side of your hand it is probably the C7-Tl level.

DBAN has been run on a computer with 100 SCSI hard disks. There are no artificial limits in DBAN, but bus bandwidth is usually a limiting factor in practical application. The actual maximum device count is limited by the number of bits allocated for major device numbers in the kernel, which can be changed.

You can get the installation disks by downloading the appropriate files from one of the Debian mirrors. The installation system files are separated in subdirectories of dists/stable/main directory, and the names of these subdirectories correspond to your architecture like this: disks-arch (arch is "i386", "sparc", etc, check the site for an exact list).

First of all, a warning: whole Debian GNU/Linux is way too large to be installed from media as small as a standard 1.44MB floppy disk - you may not find installing from floppies a very pleasant experience. Copy the Debian packages onto formatted floppy disks. Either a DOS, the native Linux "ext2", or the "minix" format will do; one just has to use a mount command appropriate to the floppy being used.

Dunes are the island's first line of defense against waves and storms. The beach grass helps keep the sand in place, thus maintaining the dune line. Beach grass is very fragile and will die if people step on it. Beach grass also has an intricate underground root system so that even though you may not step on the plant above ground, you can still destroy the grass by crushing its underground roots. To help avoid this problem, please use only the designated crossovers to get on the beach.

The dunefield and most of the adjacent Sangre de Cristo Mountains are federally designated wilderness: the dunes were made a wilderness by Congress in 1976, and the Sangres in 1993. With ever-increasing urbanization and mechanization, protected wildernesses are becoming more and more important as places where natural systems can go on unimpaired, and where visitors can enjoy the natural world without the roar of engines, oil stains, or tire tracks.

In a straight line, it is about a mile, but it is best climbed in a zig-zag fashion, following the ridge lines. Generally, it takes the average person an hour or so to reach the top of the first ridge.

While the immediate surface of the dunes changes constantly, the main dunefield as a whole is fairly stable. Comparing recent photographs with photographs taken in the late 1800???s reveals that the major dunes have maintained their overall shape and position. Vegetation in the surrounding area prevents significant migration of new sand into the main dunefield.

Sand camping is allowed on certain Siuslaw National Forest lands. Different regulations apply to areas open to motorized use and areas closed to motorized use on the Forest. For areas closed to motorized use, camping is allowed in most areas within certain guidelines. Our Camping page for more about camping outside of developed campgrounds, including areas that are off limits.

The park is located in the Northwest coast line in Benzie and Leelanau counties of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The Philip A. Hart Visitor Center is about 25 miles west of Traverse City on M-72 in Empire. The Directions page provides an area map and directions.

Yes! Take a walk along the Duneside Trail at the Dune Climb to see for yourself just how fast the dunes are moving. Gernerally, they move about 2 feet per year to the East due to the prevailing westerly winds blowing the sand. The Sleeping Bear Point Life-Saving Station had to be moved in 1930 to prevent it from being covered in sand.

Lighting can come quickly with out warning and strike with in 20 miles. In case of thunder and lightning the park staff will sound a siren. If you are in the park and hear the siren please make your way to the visitors center or your vehicle as quickly and safely as possible. No one will be allowed back on Jockey's Ridge until the storm has passed.

Park staff encourages all visitors to use sandals or shoes when visiting the dunes. Sand temperatures in the summer can be anywhere from 10-20 degrees hotter than the outside temperature. Please remember when visiting to use sunscreen and drink plenty of water.

YES!! In fact Jockey's Ridge is one of the best places on the OBX to fly kites. Rangers would like to remind you; please do not fly kites near power lines, in the parking lot or on the dune closest to the highways.

No, it's not a white dye. Snow is made of ice crystals, and up close the individual crystals look clear, like glass. A large pile of snow crystals looks white for the same reason a pile of crushed glass looks white. Incident light is partially reflected by an ice surface, again just as it is from a glass surface. When you have a lot of partially reflecting surfaces, which you do in a snow bank, then incident light bounces around and eventually scatters back out.

You can use Peter Watson's MUG! program on your IIgs to transfer files via MS-DOS Iomega Zip disks. MUG! will let you read Zip disks on a IIgs equipped with a Zip drive and a SCSI interface. MUG is an NDA; so, it can be installed like other NDA's-- e.g. having the main MUG! file (probably MUG.1.01) in the System/Desk.Accs/ folder when booting. For easy use, start with a regular ProDOS Zip disk in your IIgs Zip Drive. Start a standard IIgs desktop program that does not test inserted disks.
