How does Shotokan karate differ from other martial arts?

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for the University of Conn...
All martial arts have their specialties and unique character. Shotokan is traditional Japanese karate that specializes in punching, striking, kicking and blocking techniques. However, there is much overlap in technique among martial arts styles. For example, we also do sweeping, throwing and joint-locking techniques. In Shotokan, you won't see much of the flashy spinning and jumping about that is popular in martial arts movies - just techniques that are powerful and effective.

Shotokan Karate emphasizes strong punching, kicking and striking techniques from a foundation of solid stances. It is generally considered a “hard” style with direct forms of blocking and attack, as opposed to the more circular techniques of “soft” styles such as varieties of Chinese Kung-fu. While Shotokan incorporates sweeps, take-downs, throws and joint locks, they are not as typical of the style as they are in Judo or Aikido.

Most martial arts require years before a student is able to apply the techniques they have learned against a very real attack. Krav Maga techniques are very simple to learn and remember and therefore a student is able to perform them immediately. There are no rules in Krav Maga and you are free to attack any part of the body. Consequently there are no 'sports' type competitions in this system. Finally there are no religions attached to the principles as there are with some Eastern arts.

How does is aikido different from other martial arts?

Aikido of San Jose - FAQ
regularly practiced, aikido teaches you to deal with an attack without punching and kicking. It doesn't mean that you can't punch or kick as part of the technique, but the ideal in aikido is to be able to redirect the force of an attack by blending, or becoming one with it, and then redirecting the energy from the attack back on the attacker smoothly, and even humanely, if possible. A punch or a kick in the middle of that practice would stop the flow.

Brett Wampner): From what I have seen Martial Arts does 2 things: It increases damage done. How much? Not a huge amount per level, but Matrix with level 8 Martial Arts does quite a bit of damage per kick and he's still got a lousy strength. It increases the number of kicks you get. My not-so-very-tested formula is: Kick level + 2 plus MA level x 3. I notice Matrix runs out of kicks around 30 with a level 4 kick.
