Then I can provide a different piece to put back in the closet. If there is no closet, a piece can be taken from under a piece of furniture that is not moved, and a different piece put in its place.

If the damaged area is by a door frame, in a corner, or in a area that doesn't get much traffic it will blend in and you shouldn't be able to tell the carpet has ever been patched. On the other hand if the damaged area of your carpet is in a traffic area the patch may be more noticeable. Depending on the age of the carpet and the amount of ware in the traffic area will determine how much the patch will show in a traffic area.
