Everyone knows what an abscess is, and how painful it can be, and how ill it can make you feel. In the past, drainage of an abscess inside your chest or abdomen would have required an open operation. Now it is possible to drain abscesses by inserting a fine plastic tube, called a drainage catheter, into it through the skin, with only a tiny incision. This procedure is called percutaneous (through the skin) abscess drainage.

You need to be an in-patient in the hospital. You will probably be asked not to eat for four hours beforehand, though you may be told you can drink some water. You may receive a sedative to relieve anxiety, as well as an antibiotic. You will be asked to put on a hospital gown. If you have any allergies, you must let your doctor know. If you have previously reacted to intravenous contrast medium, the dye used for kidney x-rays and CT scanning, then you must also tell your doctor about this.

A specially trained doctor called a radiologist. Radiologists have special expertise in using x-ray and scanning equipment, and also in interpreting the images produced. They need to look at these images while carrying out the procedure.

You will lie on the x-ray or scanning table, in the position that the radiologist has decided is most suitable. You need to have a needle put into a vein in your arm, so that the radiologist can give you a sedative to relax you, or painkillers. You may also have a monitoring device attached to your chest and finger, and may receive oxygen through small tubes in your nose. The radiologist will keep everything as sterile as possible, and may wear a theatre gown and operating gloves.

There are no set guidelines as to who is a candidate but anyone of the following candidates should be preferred for CT guided drainage:

When the bacteria have invaded the root canal, chamber, and root, they multiply and produce toxins [poisons] which cause pain, and swelling as these toxins pour through the end of the root canal into the surrounding bone. The body tries to defend itself from this bacterial attack and sends the cavalry into battle. The cavalry are the protective cells in the blood which defeat invaders, they are called 'white blood corpuscles'.

When a patient seeks care for a problem there is a standard or specific treatment for that problem. Therefore, as a patient, if you seek care you have the right to expect that the health care provider will know and provide you with that care. Standard of care is the usual care needed for a specific problem.

A cyst is a fluid-filled sac, and can be located anywhere in the body. On the ovary, different types of cysts can form. The most common type of ovarian cyst is called a functional cyst, which often forms during the normal menstrual cycle. Each month, a woman's ovaries grow tiny cysts that hold the eggs. When an egg is mature, the sac breaks open to release the egg, so it can travel through the fallopian tube for fertilization. Then the sac dissolves.

There are several types of ovarian cancer. Ovarian tumors are the most histologically diverse group of tumors. At least 80 percent of malignant ovarian tumors arise from the lining of the ovary and are called epithelial carcinomas. The most common type is serous cyst adenocarcinoma, which accounts for 75 percent of cases of epithelial ovarian cancer.

Dental abscess is an inflammation caused by the formation of pus. Pus is a substance composed of bacteria, dead cells and other microorganisms. There are two main types of oral cavity abscesses. Dental abscess is an inflammation of the tooth pulp. It generally results from a caries, or tooth decay. Pus forms at the tip of the tooth root. Gingival abscess is an inflammation of the gums, resulting from typical gum diseases such as periodontitis.

Your dentist will take a routine X-Ray to check on your teeth, roots and bone every 2-5 years. It is possible and not unusual to find quite large infections in the jaw bone with no outward symptoms at all, not even minimal discomfort. The infection in the jaw bone around the end of the root is caused by bacteria and toxins leaking out of the end of the root. The body's defences are containing the infection, but only just.

Abscesses occur when an area of tissue becomes infected and the body is able to "wall off" the infection and keep it from spreading. White blood cells migrate through the walls of the blood vessels into the area of the infection and collect within the damaged tissue. During this process, pus forms (an accumulation of fluid, living and dead white blood cells, dead tissue, and bacteria or other foreign invaders or materials).

Antibiotics are often given to aid the cure of an abscess but the real cure is generally surgical. A doctor wouud open the thing up and allow the pus to drain, then the body would take care of the infection. Some have even gone so far as to "drain" their own abscesses by inserting a needle/syringe into the abscessed area and drawing out the accumulated pus, although this is not recommended.

The standard treatment for women with advanced ovarian cancer is to have their chemotherapy delivered intravenously (IV) through a drip inserted in a vein in the arm.

Many women have ovarian cysts without having any symptoms. Sometimes, though, a cyst will cause these problems:

Ovarian cysts cannot be prevented. Fortunately, the vast majority of cysts don’t cause any symptoms, are not related to cancer, and go away on their own. Talk to your doctor or nurse if you notice any changes in your period, pain in the pelvic area, or any of the major symptoms listed above. A pelvic exam, possibly with an ultrasound, can help determine if a cyst is causing the problem.

Functional ovarian cysts usually occur during the childbearing years. Most often, cysts in women of this age group are not cancerous. Women who are past menopause (ages 50-70) with ovarian cysts have a higher risk of ovarian cancer. At any age, if you think you have a cyst, it’s important to tell your doctor. Diarrhea, constipation or frequent urination caused by a large tumor pressing on nearby organs, such as the bowel or bladder Most of these may also be caused by benign (noncancerous) diseases of the ovaries and by cancers of other organs. It is important to see your doctor.

Women who have regular pelvic exams increase the chance that, if ovarian cancer occurs, it will be found before the disease causes symptoms. However, pelvic exams often cannot find ovarian cancer at an early stage. Often, the doctor orders a blood test to measure a substance in the blood called CA-125. This substance, called a tumor marker, can be produced by ovarian cancer.

Clinical trials test the safety and effectiveness of new treatment options (new treatments or old treatments used in new ways) not yet approved for general use. Standard care is a non-experimental treatment option that has been proven effective and is currently being used. Likely, the standard care being used was proven effective based on past clinical trials.
