There are many different kinds of cancer depending on where in the body the cancer starts and the type of cell involved. The most common types are prostate, breast, lung, and colorectal cancers. Out of every twenty cancer diagnoses, about three will be breast cancers, three will be prostate cancers, three will be lung cancers, and two will be colorectal. There will be about one in the bladder or kidney, one in the ovary, uterus or cervix, and one will be a lymphoma.

Basal Cell Carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer. It occurs most frequently on sun-exposed regions of the body. This cancer can destroy surrounding tissue but rarely spreads to other organs. Indicators include an open sore, a reddish patch, a growth with an elevated border and a central indentation, a bump or nodule and a scar-like area. Melanoma is a serious form of skin cancer that invades melanocytes, the cells that produce dark protective pigments called melanin.

The most common types of breast cancer are ductal carcinoma in situ, infiltrating ductal carcinoma, lobular carcinoma in situ, and infiltrating lobular carcinoma. These are only the most common types; there are also several less common types of breast cancer. Ductal carcinoma in situ: The most common type of cancer in women, it is also known by its abbreviation — DCIS — or as non-infiltrating or intraductal carcinoma.

Cancer is very common in California and the United States as a whole, and in most other developed countries. In California, more than 120,000 people are diagnosed every year with some form of invasive cancer, not including the common skin cancers. Based on current statistics, more than two out of every five Californians will develop cancer at some time in their lives, and about one in 320 children will be diagnosed with cancer before age 20.

After heart disease, cancer is the second most common cause of death in Western societies. In your lifetime, the risk of developing some kind of cancer is greater than one in three. There are perhaps 200 different types of cancer, but many are rare. The most commonly diagnosed are non-melanoma skin cancers, many of which are easily treated. For men, the next most common three types of cancer are prostate, lung and bowel. For women, breast cancer is most prevalent, followed by lung and bowel.

In Europe, cervical cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among young women (between 15-44). In Europe 40 women die each day of cervical cancer. In the UK there are approximately 2,800 new cases of cervical cancer every year and about 1,100 deaths every year. This means in the UK, 21 women on average die each week from cervical cancer.

Sporadic cancer is a very common occurrence, with an estimated 90-95% of all the cancers seen due to sporadic causes. Only 5-10% of all breast cancer cases are due to inheriting a cancer predisposition from one or both of your parents. This means that 90-95% of all breast cancer cases are due to sporadic causes, not inherited susceptibility.

Many early stage bladder cancer patients do not show any symptoms. The most common clinical presentation is blood in the urine or hematuria. Usually this is painless and the blood may be visible to the naked eye (gross hematuria) or can be seen only under the microscope (microscopic hematuria).

In American men, prostate cancer is the most common cancer (excluding skin cancer). More than 75% of the cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed in men older than 65.*

COLORECTAL CANCER is the second most common cause of cancer deaths and third most common cancer overall, representing 11 % of all newly diagnosed cancer cases. There are over 130,000 new cases of COLORECTAL CANCER each year and over 56,000 people die from this disease each year.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths, killing more people than colorectal, breast and prostate cancer combined and accounting for 150,000 deaths per year in the U.S.

Although the incidence of bladder cancer is low, there has been a significant increase in the disease over the last ten years.

This depends on the type of skin cancer. Most common are the non-melanoma skin cancers, basal and squamous cell carcinomas. The American Cancer Society estimates that approximately one million basal and squamous cell carcinomas of the skin will have been diagnosed in the US in 1998, compared with a total of 1.23 million invasive cancers of all other types combined.

Fact: The California cancer registry tracks more than 80 types of cancers. In a state the size of California, we would expect to see many areas that have a substantially greater (or lower) rate than the state average for at least one of these cancers, just by chance alone. Misconception #2: Most cancers and cancer "clusters" in residential neighborhoods are caused by environmental contamination.

There are different kinds of eye cancers. Below are some of the places near or on the eye where cancers can grow and the types that may be present on each one of these places: Eyelid tumors. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of eyelid cancer. It can be removed with surgery. Other types of eyelid tumors include squamous cell carcinoma, sebaceous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma. Tumors that grow on the surface of the eye (conjunctival tumors).

The most common type of hernia is called an inguinal hernia. An inguinal hernia is caused by a weakness or defect in the lining of the abdominal (belly) wall or pelvic (groin) wall. It can be present at birth or develop over years. A hernia can also develop in the abdominal wall around a previous incision. This is called a ventral hernia.

Neglect is the most common form of child maltreatment. CPS investigations determine that 63 percent of victims in 2001 suffered neglect; 19 percent, physical abuse; 10 percent, sexual abuse; and 8 percent, emotional maltreatment.

The most frequently diagnosed cause of short stature is achondroplasia, a genetic condition that results in disproportionately short arms and legs. The average height of adults with achondroplasia is 4'0". Other relatively common genetic conditions that result in disproportionate short stature include spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita (SEDc), diastrophic dysplasia, pseudoachondroplasia, hypochondroplasia, and osteogenesis imperfecta (OI).

Not all-musculoskeletal pain is caused by arthritis. Pain can arise from irritation of tissues around joints, such Minor injury or overuse can cause localised pain, which often lasts only for a short period. Tennis elbow and housemaid’s knee are examples. In addition, more generalised pain can develop in muscles or joints in situations where there is no arthritis, e.g. fibromyalgia

Treatments are available for all women with breast cancer, whatever the stage. Treatments are constantly evolving, so it is important to talk to your doctor about your therapy. There are many options you and your doctor will consider. Sometimes more than one treatment is needed. Surgery is an important part of treatment for many women with breast cancer. Many women can choose between lumpectomy and mastectomy.

Each year there are nearly 15,000 new cases of oesophageal cancer in the USA, nearly 1500 in Canada, nearly 1200 in Australia and 6,000 in the UK. Some countries, such as Turkey, China, India and South Africa have very high rates of this type of cancer. Even within Europe there is a wide variation. The rate in the UK and Ireland is ten times higher than in Greece and Spain.

A.Several studies have found that coffee consumption is related to a lower risk of bowel cancer. According to one study in Canada, the risk reduced as coffee drinking rose to five cups a day (especially evident in men) (3). Another group of studies noted there was a 28% reduction in the risk of developing cancer of the lower bowel for those drinking four or more cups of coffee daily as compared to those drinking less than one cup (4).

Basal cell carcinoma is a slow-growing cancer that seldom spreads to other parts of the body. Basal cells, which are round, form the layer just underneath the epidermis, or outer layer of the skin. Squamous cell carcinoma spreads more often than basal cell carcinoma, but still is considered rare. Squamous cells, which are flat, make up most of the epidermis. Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer.

This is a tricky one because sometimes there aren't any. One-quarter of people don't even have symptoms when their lung cancer is advanced, reports the CDC. In other people, symptoms that may suggest lung cancer can include:

Breast cancer does not often occur in teens. However, it is important to take care of your body now. Knowledge of familial history is also important.

Cervical cancer "in situ", is not required to be reported to the Registry, and are not included in the statistics. Certain skin cancers are not reportable unless they are diagnosed at an advanced stage.

There are hundreds of different types of cancer. They are identified by the type of body tissue involved or by the body part involved. The major classifications of cancer are: Carcinoma: a malignant tumor found in the outermost covering or lining of body surfaces or organs. These tumors are found on the skin, in the mouth and throat, stomach and bowel, or in organs like the mammary gland, liver, lung or bladder.

TThe most common kinds of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Basal cell carcinoma arises from the basal cells, small round cells found in the lower part (or base) of the epidermis. SSquamous cell carcinoma begins in squamous cells, which are thin, flat cells that look like fish scales found in the tissue that forms the surface of the skin, the lining of the hollow organs of the body, and the passages of the respiratory and digestive tracts.
