There may be a layer that has a solid fill turned on that is drawing above and blocking the aerial imagery. The aerial imagery is the very bottom layer. Turn off solid fill layers that appear above the aerial imagery.

During much of the year I fly twice a week taking aerial photographs. I prefer to shoot on crystal clear, full sun days; although that is not always possible. We are lucky to get two dozen or so clear days the entire year while in the summer haze is a huge problem. I work around it as best I can and oftentimes will use a cloudy day for my shoots if the air is clear. My primary concern is always about the time of day a property needs to be photographed to show it looking best.

The aerial photographs are very large in size and in order to view them on the interactive map you must zoom in at a close range. The check boxes next to the aerial photography layers will remain greyed out, or inactive, until you are zoomed into an acceptable level.

Black and white aerial photographs were taken in 1/2 foot and one foot resolution of Contra Costa County in May of 2000. This was a cooperative effort between Contra Costa County, The NPDES Clean Water Program, Ironhouse Sanitary District and Contra Costa Central Sanitary District. You can import images as you would any other Layer with one important difference. You can not just unproject image data as you would vector data with MyWorld. So you must indicate to MyWorld what projection to use so that it can project the vector data to match your image (kinda like that whole Mohammed/Mountain dilemma). Follow these steps for viewing images in MyWorld: Switch to the visualize tab and change the projection (upper right) to the correct coordinate system for example ..

In aerial photography, bigger is always better. There is something wonderful about seeing tiny details show up in an aerial enlargement. Your aerial photograph can be enlarged up to 40” x 60” with little or no loss of resolution.

A map (21k-text-based version available) identifies the year(s) in which the aerial photography was taken, as well as the replacement schedule for the photography. The airphotos are black and white infrared with a scale of 1:15,840 (4" to the mile). Satellite imagery and aerial photography are in many ways complementary. They both have their strengths and weaknesses. Satellite imagery is useful because of its stable nature (same resolution, same time, same data characteristics). Aerial photography is useful because of its customizable nature (flexible time, flexible resolution, flexible data characteristics). Some analyses can be conducted in the same manner with both data sets.

Drawing from reference photographs can be helpful. I don't encourage "copying" photographs, just draw from them. A drawing copied from a photograph tends to be stiff and lifeless. Use photos as a point of departure. You can use them to record valuable details. There are a few things to keep in mind, however. Photos tend to flatten the picture plain. Shadows can be flat. Colors may be inaccurate. When I know I might work from a photo, I make sure I also do a quick reference sketch of the subject.
