There are two main things to consider: how the resin wets out the cloth and how well is fills the weave. The thinner resins, like Clear Coat, will wet cloth easier, but take more coats to fill the weave. With thicker resins, like System Three General Purpose, the opposite is true.

Lower grade films lack the adhesive to bond at reasonable tempertures. The "smell" you are experiencing is caused by the high heat (>300 degrees) necessary to adhere (melt) the laminating film to your project. Laminating resin is greenish blue in color and is the basic first coat of resin; it is used to adhere the cloth to the blank (this resin will only dry tacky and not sandable!) While it is obvious you cannot use laminating film that is wider than your roll or pouch laminating machine, you can use any film that is equal to or narrower than your laminating machine mandrel or pouch machine opening width. No, epoxy resin is only needed when the foam inside the surfboard is exposed. In other words, when you can see and touch the foam. If you have a small ding in an area like the nose or tail where the XTR foam is exposed, you don't have to repair it. It will not change color or gain any weight due to the closed cell foam. The water will not penetrate the surfboard. You will only need to fix this small ding for cosmetics and for safety.

Many newcomers to large format inkjet printing find themselves reprinting jobs ruined when the laminating film peels away from the print (delamination). This is typically caused by the wrong choice of materials, or attempting to laminate inkjet prints that are not fully dry. Sometimes prints that feel dry to the touch, may not in fact be adequately dry, due to the presence of glycol, an oily-type solvent used in nearly all water-based inks.

The image needs to be thoroughly dry before laminating. Generally, take at least 30minutes. To assure a completely dry print, wait until the next day before laminating.

Make sure the setting of the laminator matches the laminate (temperature, webbing, pressure of the rollers and supply roll tension).
