If a photographer wants to either under expose or over expose the picture deliberately he can't do so by simply changing the aperture or shutter speed on an auto exposure camera. If you stop down the aperture the camera automatically goes to a slower shutter speed keeping the exposure at the same level and vice versa. Exposure compensation will now come to your help.
