The children in the lower grades eat lunch in their classroom family style. Lunch is available from the school. Some families choose not to use the school lunch program and instead send a lunch prepared at home for their child. The Upper school students eat café style in the building cafeteria. Lunch is served on half days (11:30 dismissal). Parents take turns bringing snacks for the class: juice and a healthy food like crackers or pretzels would be appreciated.

All five flavors of our ExtendBar Delight formula are gluten-free. Our ExtendCrisps are made from gluten-free ingredients, but are not certified gluten-free because the manufacturing process for the Crisps hasn't been confirmed to adequately protect from gluten contamination from other products made at the facility. Our two flavors of ExtendBar Crunch not gluten-free, since they contain a very small amount of barley malt extract.

All of our snacks except for Stealth Chips, CHAOS, Honey Wheat Pretzels and Pirate's Pretzels are Gluten Free (There is a Gluten and Wheat free version of the Chaos). Since gluten is used on other snacks at the plant, we do not put it on our bags. They run our snacks first, thoroughly clean the machines between runs, and train all the employees on allergen control to reduce the possibility of cross contamination. However, we cannot 100% guarantee that there can never be a cross-contamination.

A Gluten-Free Diet is the only treatment for Celiac Disease (CD) and/or Dermatitis Herpetiformis (DH). It is a life-long committed diet and should not be started before being properly diagnosed with CD/DH. When gluten is removed from the diet, the small intestine will start to heal and overall health improves. Medication is not normally required. Because osteoporosis is common and may be profound in patients with newly diagnosed CD, bone density should be measured at or shortly after diagnosis.

Students should come to camp prepared with a snack and a bagged lunch including a drink each day. Please note that refrigeration will not be available.

We do not provide a hot lunch program for our students at this time. Children who attend TKS all day are required to bring their own lunch and children in Grades 2 & above have access to microwaves. We recognize an increasing need to provide products for those with special food needs. At this time, we do not have any gluten-free products.

Although the exact cause of celiac disease is not known, having certain genes increases your risk. You are more likely to have these genes and may get celiac disease if you have a first-degree relative (mother, father, brother, sister, son, or daughter) with the condition. Environmental factors, such as viral or bacterial infections, may trigger changes in the small intestine in people with these genes; then, eating foods that contain gluten can trigger an abnormal immune system response.

A few patients have a poor clinical and/or histologic (biopsy) response to the diet. An important step in assessing patients who are non-responders is to confirm the diagnosis of celiac disease by review of the original biopsy, preferably by an expert gastrointestinal pathologist. However, the most common cause of a poor response is continued gluten ingestion, which may be intentional or unintentional.

Dawn Food Products currently does not offer any gluten-free bakery products that would be suitable for someone with Celiac Disease.
