Penetrating trauma is lower in numbers for Rochester, but resident electives at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Ariz., Jacksonville, Fla., and North Memorial Hospital in Minneapolis allow exposure to penetrating trauma. The traumas in Rochester are run by teams of emergency medicine and surgery residents. The leader for the trauma alternates each day between the EM senior and the surgical senior."

The vast majority of injured patients are primarily evaluated and treated by the Emergency Department. Patients with serious injuries likely to require operative intervention or ICU care are evaluated and resuscitated in conjunction with a surgical team, supervised by the ED and Trauma attending.

The first phase of the IECRN project was coordinated by Westat with support from Lockheed Martin Aspen Systems, Social & Scientific Systems, and Borland. An Advisory Panel of 12 clinical research network experts also provided consultation to the project team. Westat is coordinating the second phase of the project to continue to maintain and update the inventory of clinical research networks.

Excellent. Our trauma teams are composed of one half EM residents and one half surgery residents. The trauma teams have excellent communication during the resuscitations and we work very well together. We also have a three-month block combining trauma surgery, EM and the Surgical ICU. During these three months, we work hand-in-hand with the surgical residents. This is a great bonding time to establish relationships that are needed for communication later in the Emergency Department."

It is normal for survivors to react in shock and disbelief, followed by extraordinary distress including anger, fear, confusion, frustration, guilt, and grief. Easy -- skip over the birth process completely. Go from "I am one day old" to "I am minus one day old" which means the day before you were born. If minus numbers bother you, try this: "I am now at the day before I was born" etc. Some folks revel in explaining all the interesting effects that happen when they help someone relive birth trauma -- like kicking in walls, retching on the floor, and writhing in pain. I say: Skip over those "interesting" effects.
