Food stained paper should not be recycled because it can attract pests to your curb and the transfer stations. It also can contaminate the product at the paper mill. Even if you do not think that your paper product is food contaminated, our drivers are instructed not to accept these items so oftentimes they will be left.

Although it looks the same as other food packaging, the paper used for frozen food boxes is treated with substances to improve the “wet strength” of the paper. On the good side, it keeps the package from breaking apart and protects the food inside the package. The bad part of “wet strength” is that the wax-like substance hinders the paper from breaking down in the recycled paper pulping process, making the frozen food boxes not recyclable.

These items have chemicals imbedded in the fibers of the product that are what keep the boxes from getting soggy when they are wet or frozen. In the remanufacturing process these items break down at a much slower rate than the rest of paper so we ask that you keep them out of your recycling. Items like cereal and cracker boxes that seem like they are made of the same material actually only have a coating on the outside of them so they can break down as easily as other paper.

First of all, DO NOT EAT IT. Seal the food in a plastic bag or container and contact your local Borough or District Council Environmental Health Department.
