If you are an international student (and your medium of instruction for your undergraduate studies was NOT in English), you need a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (or 213 computer based). This is a University Graduate Studies and Research requirement. Students that submit TOEFL scores lower than the minimum will be denied admission.

The last acceptable deadline to take the GRE or TOEFL is in December. It is strongly recommended that you take the test prior to the application deadline. The January test dates are typically too late.

For foreign applications, we require a TOEFL score of 600. While your GRE score is important, we have no specific cut-off for GRE scores, and consider the GRE score to be just one part of your overall application. First we look at the applications on their individual merit. We look at all of the materials and try to arrive at an accurate portrait of the applicant that includes experience, the breadth of previous coursework and recommendations. We do see scores and GPAs in all ranges. In general, however, competitive GRE scores will be in the 600s for the verbal section, in the 600s for the quantitative section, and 5 or above (on a 6-point scale) for the writing section. Competitive GPAs will be 3.

If you're taking the TOEFL CBT the minimum score is 250. If it is available in your country and you are taking the TOEFL IBT, then the minimum score is a total of 80 points, with a minimum of 23 on the Speaking section. Individual departments may require higher scores. The IBT minimums are subject to change as we gain more experience on what these scores actually mean in terms of proficiency.

The minimum score our department will accept for the computer based TOEFL is 250 (or equivalent for paper or internet based TOEFL). There are no established minimum requirements for the GPA or GRE. The average GPA of the students that were accepted into our program in recent years was 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale). Typically our students have scored above the 60th percentile on the GRE.

You should plan to take the tests allowing enough time for the official scores to arrive before the Field deadline; generally this process takes 3-4 weeks; however, it is recommended that the tests be taken no later than October due to the large volume of testing that occurs after that time.

The Graduate Division does not set minimum score requirements for the GRE. Each program has its specific admission requirements. There is not a set minimum score needed for admission. The score on the admission test is just one of several factors considered for admission. Some programs allow conditional admission. For these programs, the graduate advisor may allow a student to take classes for one semester without taking the required admission exam. It is at the discretion of the graduate advisor and academic dean to offer a student conditional admission status.

There are no minimum test score requirements. As a reference, however, the average GRE scores for the entering class of Fall 2006 were Verbal: 566, Quantitative: 760, and Analytical: 4.4. General GRE scores are required: your application will absolutely not be considered without them. The Subject GRE policy is more flexible.
