Yes. Diocesan priests are canon lawyers serving on the Tribunal, chaplains in high schools and colleges, and prison or hospital chaplains. Some are professors or teachers in high schools, colleges, and seminaries. Others are scholars in some field of Church studies, such as Scripture scholars or moral theologians. Diocesan priests may work as licensed counselors and psychologists. Usually, priests in these various ministries have some connection to parish ministry, even if only on weekends.

Diocesan priests make no vows. For ordination, they freely make promises of celibacy and obedience to their Bishop.

In the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, diocesan priests' salaries average about $40,000 yearly. They rent their living quarters and are responsible for their own car and insurance, pension plan payments, and retirement savings. In some dioceses, a diocesan priest receives a monthly stipend which can be $400 or more. He might also receive room and board, or have a car and car insurance paid for by the parish he serves. All diocesan priests pay taxes.

Total Ministry is a grass-roots, defined-in-the-congregation type of plan. The Canon Missioners from the Diocese introduced the various options, but we are not forced to follow any particular plan. Total Ministry when accepted is refined and adapted to the individual situation.

Parish nursing is a health promotion, disease prevention ministry based on the care of the whole person and encompassing seven functions. Can we trust as Paul did “God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength?” (I Cor 1:25) In our lives we want to be ordered and predictable, but disability and sickness, whatever its cause, will require changes, new ways.

Given the unique role of priests and religious, they cannot be "replaced" by lay ministers. Often times those interested in developing a parish nurse ministry perceive it as a simple endeavor requiring little time effort and resources. Like any other ministry being introduced into the congregation, if it is to sustain over time, careful planning and implementation need to be provided. Often the early work of mindset development and education can be time consuming. It must be considered that the work group will meet probably once a month for two hours.

Read the available literature on parish nursing. Re-look at Scripture from the perspective of health and healing. Perhaps enroll in a seminary course on health and healing and the congregation. This may provide a new perspective in which to preach to the members of the congregation where they are given the opportunity to begin to see how their congregation is really serving as a health place in the community.

Total Ministry is all the baptized members ministering together. It prepares members of a congregation toserve as a team in the ministerial leadership roles traditionally filled by a seminary-trained priest. Total Ministry may also be called "mutual ministry," or "collaborative ministry." Our overall approach to missions training is to immerse students within the culture and among the people.
