The network or wireless PC Card provided with the Air2Data kit is called a PCMCIA Card or PC Card. Almost all laptops have one or more PC Card slots. Some laptop manufacturers place a plastic cover over these slots. Often you must remove the plastic cover by using the adjacent eject button or latch. We have provided a picture of a few different styles under our Troubleshooting Guide below.

We have tested the following cards, and they all work successfully: Apple Airport, Dell TrueMobile? 1150, and Intel Pro/Wireless? 2011. We have also successfully tested the HP Jornada model 540 PDA, using a Symbol? Spectrum24? Wireless Networker Card. Many students have used a wide variety of cards successfully with our system. Generally speaking, any 802.11(b) card should work, as long as it is "IEEE 802.11b "Wi-Fi" Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS)" compliant.

Most laptop computers purchased in the last year already have a wireless network card that should be able to access the wireless network. There is a list of tested wireless cards that can be found here for guest access and here for student access. Also check the certified product listing at the Wi-Fi Alliance web site, www.wifi.org, to see if your wireless network card is compatible with the 802.11b/g standard.

All network devices need to be registered in the Stanford network database (NetDB) before they are allowed to connect to SUNet. Even if you have already registered your laptop's wired Ethernet connection, you must register your wireless connection separately. You will need to provide the MAC address of the wireless card (printed on a sticker on the bottom of the card, or the bottom of your laptop if you have built-in wireless), and the Host name of your Mac or PC.

The Cisco cards will not require any special configuration. Follow the installation instructions and activate the card. Other brands of client adapters should work with their default configuration as well. If they don't then go to the Troubleshooting page for more assistance.

VPN server (vpn.cs.tamu.edu) Students may connect using either the Cisco VPN client or the Windows VPN client. The configuration is the same as connecting to the campus vpn.

We have engineered the campus wireless network to recognize those with a valid SUNY Oswego computer account. The first time you connect to the campus wireless network, you'll go to a special registration page that allows you to download the necessary software (a VPN client) that's already configured to work with our wireless network. There are 6 public printers in the department. A listing of these printers, their locations, and other facilites available within the department is available at http://www.math.duke.edu/computing/facilities.html The public printers are all accessible from the wireless network or from any Duke IP address. You should use IPP printing to connect to the server ipp://printhost.math.duke.edu with queue name /printers/lw0 for example.

Students must register their laptop and wireless network card with the Help Desk by filling out a Laptop Registration and Use Agreement Form. The MAC address of your wireless NIC will be bound to your login account. Should you need to change your wireless NIC, you must visit the help desk and register the new network card. At the end of each term your wireless access will be disabled. Continuing students must re-register every term.
