When I run Emacs, nothing happens. Whats the deal?

GNU Emacs FAQ for Windows
Emacs could have failed to run for a number of reasons. The most common symptom is that, when Emacs is started, the cursor changes for a second but nothing happens. If this happens to you, it is quite likely that the distribution was unpacked incorrectly. Be sure to disable the CR/LF translation or the executables will be unusable. Older versions of WinZipNT would enable this translation by default. If you are using WinZipNT, disable it. Check that filenames were not truncated to 8.3.

Should I run R from within Emacs?

R FAQ
Yes, definitely. Inferior R mode provides a readline/history mechanism, object name completion, and syntax-based highlighting of the interaction buffer using Font Lock mode, as well as a very convenient interface to the R help system. Of course, it also integrates nicely with the mechanisms for editing R source using Emacs. One can write code in one Emacs buffer and send whole or parts of it for execution to R; this is helpful for both data analysis and programming.

Ok, I got myself some proxies, but they none of them seem to do anything, whats the deal?

SEO Exploits & An SEOs Guide to Proxies - FAQ
Quite simply, most people who provide proxies do not test them properly first. Due to the nature of proxies they regularly go down, and run under some odd parameters. Your average proxy list goes through one stage checking against what is called a “proxy judge”. However, due to the nature of checks in the average standalone software — it’s not always possible to detect whether a proxy is truly active or not.

Whats the deal with Editors Choice, who selects it and how is it chosen?

FAQ - Addon DB
Awards are essentially picked by administrators. Having said this we do read the comments people make, and look at various addon statistics when deciding which awards to hand out. All awards are quite an honor as they are rather elusive and not just handed out. Rather they are given out only in recognition of great work corresponding with the award received.

Joel has a computer consulting business and hosts the PilotsUnited.com on his computers. Their deal is basically to provide a free (and pop-up free) site for pilots, with a focus on United pilots.

So what's the deal with fire?

Burning Man: What is Burning Man?: FAQ
Everyone enjoys a camp fire to gather around or the light of a tiki torch to guide them back to camp at night but fire and open flame present a unique set of challenges on the playa. Wind is an ever-present aspect of the Black Rock desert and must be taken into consideration. Winds can blow sparks and embers out of fire barrels and blow them across the open playa great distances until they settle against something (tents, shade structures, camping gear, art works, etc).

The short answer is, 'It depends, and you should ask your lawyer.' But you aren't asking your lawyer, you are asking me, so I'll try to give you some general background and examples. Bear in mind that every situation varies, and there are other points of view besides your own, so consulting your lawyer would be wise. Most often the deal fails to close because one of the offer conditions is not met, and for good reason.

What happens if I run it on regular unleaded instead of high octane?

Volkswagen Touareg Frequently-Asked Questions
The Touareg's engine management system will retard ignition timing sufficiently to prevent predetonation (knock or ping). This may or may not be noticeable to the average Touareg driver, but theoretically should reduce the performance of the engine. Some have suggested that premium fuel has benefits beyond its octane content. One claimed benefit of premium fuel is that it includes better detergents to prevent the build-up of deposits in the engine's combustion chamber.

Whats with all these different string sizes? How do i know what to use?

Frequently Asked Questions
Its all about string tension, feel and tuning. For example, 9 gauge strings (9 - 42) are considered normal for electric guitars and they come standard on most brands. These are great for people who play in E Standard tuning (or Drop D) with a light touch and want easy string bending. The next step up is 10 gauge strings (10 - 46) which you can still tune to E Standard for a stiffer feel or tune down a half step to E Flat Standard (or Drop C Sharp) for the same tension as 9 gauge strings.
