In many cases, new and improved services for parents with disabilities -- and even larger changes in system-wide or statewide policies - began with one parent's effort to find appropriate information and resources in their local community. Our National Parent-to-Parent Network not only provides networking opportunities for parents with disabilities.

A variety of formal and informal services are available to members of the adoptive family, either as a group or as individuals. Support groups, counseling, respite care, medical services, educational resources, and a variety of community resources may be available to help meet ongoing needs or new needs that may have surfaced after the adoption finalization.

Parents with disabilities" include a broad spectrum of mothers and fathers of children of all ages including adult children. Some parents are blind, Deaf, have a physical disability, a psychiatric disability, or a developmental disability. Some disabilities are life-long, others are more recent. Disabilities can be stable, progressive or varying.

In general, there is very little reliable data on the numbers of parents with disabilities - by disability, by state, or by age of children. Most public data systems do not even gather information that identifies parents with disabilities. The result is an underestimate of the numbers of families with parental disability in community needs assessments and a lack of funding for their services.

In 1997, TLG's National Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Families of Adults with Disabilities conducted a national survey of parents with disabilities. There are 20 Workforce Investment Act (WIA) service areas in Georgia, and each area has at least one comprehensive or full-service One-Stop Workforce Center providing services. Most areas have several locations for accessing services. These service access points may include GDOL career centers, One-Stop Centers, technical colleges, Voc Rehab offices, Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS) offices, or other community based organizations.

Answer: Yes, detoxification services are provided within the county. Some alcohol & drug service clients do require detoxification prior to entry into an alcohol or drug treatment program. All labs accommodate wheelchairs. On the Leesburg campus, there is a computer with the JAWS program on it, and there is also an OPTELEC Clear View 300 machine available.

Persons with disabilities can access Learning Support Services by taking a key operated elevator to the 4th floor of the Library. The LGBTA Student Resource Center has a variety of resources for gay parents. We have a library with many books, magazines and videos on the subject. Community members as well as those associated with the university are welcome to use the materials. Parents dealing with coming out or divorce may also use the Center for resources to lawyers or counselors in the areas as well as a way to find information about the local LGBT community and networking.

Home schooling children with special needs is gaining in popularity. As this continues, you will see much more support and resources available to you. Below we have listed organizations that may be helpful to you. Some of the resources listed are Christian and some are secular. Sometimes, the explanatory type will tell you, sometimes not. As always, families need to be discerning.

Patrons who are unable to use the main doors can enter the building through the Disabilities Services entrance also located on the East side. The Center for Adaptive Technology, located in the Computer Lab, offers computer resources for visually and auditory impaired patrons.

Students can meet with the Director, the Learning Specialist, or a Counselor to develop advocacy skills or to receive support and assistance in accessing college services and accommodations. No - without your permission, your parents will never find out about visits to Health Services. If you are covered under college insurance, there is no bill, and your parents will not receive an itemized statement. If you are not covered under college insurance, a bill for your tests will come first to your dorm, and if you do not respond within 30 days, only then will it be sent to your parents.
