The degree of cracking (or "checking" as it is called by carvers) that occurs in a carving really depends on several things. First it depends on the amount of moisture in the log. If the log is freshly cut, it retains a great deal of the original moisture of the tree. It may take years for the wood to dry out. Most logs dry at about 1 inch per year. So a fresh cut log that is 18 inches in diameter may take up to 8 or 9 years to completely dry.

Yes, most cracks can be repaired. It is a good idea to wait until the log is dry, or finished cracking before repairing the crack. It will open back up again if it is not dry. In the mean time, a little stain placed in the crack may help hide the crack from view until it dries. An example might be using a little dark stain to fill in a crack on a black bears back. This will make the crack practically invisible, while the carving finishes drying out a little more.

Leather carving is basically cutting a pattern into the leather with a swivel knife then stamping with a variety of tools to shape and texture the pattern.

Figure carving is the carving of birds, animals, people, trees, and objects (as opposed to patterns). Much figure carving is done with backdrops such as landscapes. Figure carving takes more practice to become skillful, but is very rewarding. In general, figure carving also requires more stamping tools.

Carving and tooling leather is the process by which almost any image can be cut into leather. First an image is chosen and carved into the leather with a special knife. Then a series of tools are used to give the image depth and a 3D appearance. Carved images tend to be superior to embossed images because the image is cut into the leather whereas embossed images are just stamped into the leather.

What is the best router? I usually don't recommend brands. But I will say this: Don't make your router purchasing decision based on price alone. Whatever plunge router you choose, make sure it has a smooth-operating plunge mechanism. I've used inexpensive plunge routers that stick and jerk during plunging and this can easily throw off the accuracy of your cut and ruin your work. 1-1/2 horsepower is plenty of power, but more doesn't hurt.

It will replicate a full 360 degrees if the carving and duplicate blank are rotated during the carving process. Most woodworkers find that carving two sides gives them four sided results. I use it for fish so when I carve one side I just flip the original over and the blank and complete the other side. Once both sides are cut, the top and bottom of the fish are automatically completed since they were the outer profile of the sides.

Concrete, like all other materials, will slightly change in volume when it dries out. In typical concrete this change amounts to about 500 millionths.
