A - Yes. With the cost of electricity going up dramatically, all incandescent lamps that operate for more than three hours a day should be replaced with CFLs. Fortunately, the prices of CFLs have been coming down dramatically. CFLs equipped with electronic ballasts can now be purchased for less than $10.00 in many locations. CFLs are three to four times more efficient than incandescent sources and last many times longer.

Both regular incandescent bulbs and halogen bulbs create light by heating a tungsten filament. Usually, the bulb burns out when the filament is fully depleted. The filament on a regular incandescent bulb burns out over time because the tungsten on the filament evaporates and is redeposited on the bulb's glass. (Those tungsten deposits are the reason bulbs often appear darker when they burn out.

As a result of grain boundary etching and the development of porosity due to tungsten evaporation (near the end of life, a cross-section of the filament resembles Swiss cheese) within the filament, the resistance increases during life so the current decreases at constant volts. However, the current decrease is not substantial. Light output over life will depend upon both operating wattage and any bulb blackening caused by tungsten deposits on the bulb wall.

Incandescent bulbs have a carbon filament which darkens the glass envelope over time, last a few hundred hours and produce a warmer (more yellow) light. Halogen bulbs use a tungsten filament which does not darken the walls of the quartz/glass envelope because of the halogen process, lasts much longer, has a cooler (more blue) light and is exceptionally hot when turned on. Because these bulbs burn at such high temperatures we recommend they not be touched with your bare fingers.

Yes - almost. Just don't use them with a dimmer switch or a touch-on lamp. It would burn out the ballast. Also, they can't be used outside because the ballast would get too cold to start the light.

you can see by the energy savings and longevity of the CFL, anywhere the lamp will fit is a good place to use them. However, the best places for compact fluorescent lights are in frequently used fixtures that are on for at least three hours at a time. Difficult to reach fixtures are also good places to put compact fluorescent lights because you will have to change them less often.

To use a compact fluorescent bulb on a dimmer switch, you must buy a bulb that's specifically made to work with dimmers (check the package). GE makes a dimming compact fluorescent light bulb (called the Energy Smart Dimming Spirals®) that is specially designed for use with dimming switches. We don't recommend using regular compact fluorescent bulbs with dimming switches, since this can shorten bulb life.

GE does make CFL bulbs for use in 3-way lamps. Check the package for this application. If a regular CFL is use in a 3-way switch, it will work on the middle (medium) setting and it should not damage the bulb. The 3-way switch does not alter the performance of the bulb.

Compact fluorescent light bulbs may generally be used in enclosed fixtures as long as the enclosed fixture is not recessed. Totally enclosed recessed fixtures (for example, a ceiling can light with a cover over the bulb) create temperatures that are too high to allow the use of a compact fluorescent bulb.

Ballasts are used to regulate the current in the lamp. Current needs to be regulated in order to supply the right amount of power needed to make the arc, and thus the light, in a fluorescent lamp. Fortunately, the current is lower than that needed for a typical incandescent. This is the reason why the fluorescent lamps can provide the same light output for less energy than typical incandescents.
