If the question is: Is it possible to have the computer 'convert' a WAVE file to a MIDI file in such a way that the MIDI file (when played back) sounds like the original WAVE file? The answer is: NO! A MIDI file is a sequence of commands to control one or more pieces of equipment (synthesizers most of the time). These commands are not sounds, they are recorded operations to DO something (mostly to GENERATE sound). A WAVE file IS sound. It is the recording of a sound wave.

If you want the WAVE file to sound exactly like the MIDI file when you play it using your MIDI equipment, then you can use this method: Open up an application to play the MIDI file AND open up an application which will allow you to record the piece as a WAVE file. Hit 'record' on the WAVE application and 'play' on the MIDI player. Beware though that you will need a computer that is fast enough to have both programs running without interruption.

To convert songs on CDs into MP3 files, you can use ripper and encoder software. The encoder compresses the song into the MP3 format.  You can use the CD ripper software that came with your MP3 player or opt to use other ripping and encoding software.

Because a strong majority of Palm OS handhelds supports the SMF0 format only, you have to make sure all MIDI files you install from your PC are saved in this very format. If they are not, they can be easily converted. Use the MIDI File Format Conversion utility that can process single files or entire directories. It's lightening fast and completely free.

First import the MIDI with the default settings. If you are not satisfied with the results, you can adjust some of the import settings. Note: MIDI Import Plug-in supprots SMF0 MIDI files only. Importing other MIDI formats may be inaccurate.

Go to HoHo Preferences ("Options => HoHo Preferences"), choose a MIDI database to which new MIDI files will be exported, and press the "OK" button.

After installing the latest update for DartPro 98, I don't have a shortcut to CD-Recorder 4 Basic in my 'Start' / 'Programs' folder. What's going on? How do I fix this?"

No program exists that will analyze a .WAV-type file and "compose" a corresponding MIDI file, for the simple reason that with current technology, Most "proposed" schemes involve operations such as Fast Fourier Transforms (FFT's) and wavelet transforms, etc. These take a .WAV-type file, generally called "waveform data," and, in the case of the Fourier transform, breaks it down into its component sinusoidal wave frequencies and amplitudes.

Pa1X natively saves its Songs (and Backing Sequences) as Standard MIDI Files (format 0). No conversion is needed. However, when making songs to be later exchanged with other instruments, please remember the following: Pa1X directly records in SMF format. Any SMF reader should be able to read it. Be sure the file's extension is correct (usually ".mid"). Track 10 shall be reserved to Drums. When saving a Backing Sequence, track 11 is also reserved to Drum/Percussions.

Not exactly a text format, but also very useful: MIDINotate Musician or Composer does a surprisingly good job with converting MIDI files to printable sheet music, even if the quantization is tricky. Free 30-day trial version for Windows. If you're willing to switch to Java as your programming language you'll find it has an extensive library for parsing/generating midi files. It is not possible to convert Wave into DSS; when you convert into wave it is always saved as a copy. Please, do not delete the original DSS file if you still want to use it.

MIDI isn't really sound! MIDI is a bunch of commands that tell a compatible sound module or sound card which sounds it has to generate. Although this seems to be rather complicated if you consider a whole piece of music, the amount of data that's necessary to do this is incredibly much less than in an audio recording of the same sound! The MIDI file is about 500 times smaller than a CD quality recording of the sound that the sound module generates.

Conversions to and from MIDI, although more or less possible, are very difficult. MIDI files have a very different set of commands. One of the more important differences is, that the MIDI device 'knows' how to process its sounds, when it receives commands from the MIDI player. For example how fast to decay a piano waveform. This information is not stored in the MIDI file itself, it's in the synthesizer. A MOD file however would have this included.

Please run command "Sndvol32.exe /p" from your computer's "Start > Run..." dialog. Then check the volume control to "All Mute". Please pay attention that you must uncheck the "All Mute" after conversion, otherwise, when you play an audio file, it will have no sound.

Even though the registered MIME type for MIDI files is audio/midi, some browsers are not set up to recognize it as such; instead, they look for audio/x-midi. There are two things you can do to address this: Configure your browser to treat documents of type audio/midi correctly. This is the type that Apache sends by default. This may not be workable, however, if you have many client installations to change, or if some or many of the clients are not under your control.

MP3 enable to compressed sound in various conditions. The quality of sound depends on the following standards. It is possible to replay sound very close to the original when kbps and kHz are increased, which enable them to keep more information. The general setting for MP3 is 128kbps/44.1kHz. This level will make it possible to reply any sound in close to CD.

MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. This kind of music type is composed by 128 instruments at the most. The file size is very small compared to the WAV files or MP3 files.

Some programs do allow you to convert single tones (monophonic instruments and such) to a midi data, but as far as converting complex recordings and arrangements, currently, it hasn't been done. The first person who comes up with an accurate way to convert complex audio recordings into midi will be rich though (maybe), and will need to adopt me as their son.

MIDI", "SMF0", "MIDI file", "MIDI Alarm", and "MIDI Ringtone" generally mean the same (they differ from the "ringtones", though). MIDI (file) is a piece of music written as binary data. SMF0 is a subformat of MIDI - the only one that can be played by all Palm OS devices - it contains one single track (thus it mustn't be polyphonic, etc.).

A lot of sequence programs allow you in the operation "Save as", to choose for one or the other. Sometimes (like in Cakewalk) you will find this under "Options". Then there are (small) utilities, that will do this transformation for you. One of these you will find at the excellent utilities site:

To save MIDI data to disk, use the 'midiToDisk' object. To route MIDI to other software in Windows (for example Logic, Cubase or Sonar), you can use for example Hubi's MIDI Loopback Device or MidiMux. To route MIDI to other software inside MacOSX, you do not have to install everything, because software also appears automaticly inside hardware-lists.

MIDI, which stands for "musical instrument digital interface," is an electronic music format which contains a list of notes to play and descriptions of the instruments to play them on. Since MIDI files contain lists of musical notes, and not actual sounds, they are much smaller than WAV or AIF files of the same duration. However, MIDI files can only create music, not sound effects or speech.

Rename the wave file you want to use to killad.wav and put it into KillAd folder. Starting with KillAd v0.07 you can put as many sound files (*.wav) as you want into the KillAd folder and select the Play Sound/Random menu item. The KillAd's sound subsystem is intentionally programmed to not interrupt any currently playing wave sounds. Imagine that you're listening to some MPEG file. KillAd destroys a popup, stops your MPEG and plays its sound.

Yes, if you have Unified Messaging set up in your email client. Unified Messaging will list your voice mail messages along with your e-mails in your e-mail client view and will allow you to listen to your voice mails from your e-mail client through the media player on your computer. The file format of the voice mail is known as a wave file. Once you listen to it you may save it or delete it.
