Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fly a self-launch Silent mostly as a power-plane and occasionally go soaring?

AliSport
NO! This is not what self-launchers are designed for! Self-launchers generally spend minimal time in the power mode and most of their lives soaring. Their engines are used for some taxiing, predominantly for launching, and occasionally for retrieval or ferry flights. Basically the engine exists to provide opportunities.
Related Questions

I am 6 feet tall and 200 pounds. Can I fly the self-launch Silent?

AliSport
Both your height and weight are within the upper limit, and you will fit very comfortably in all versions of the Silent. Our US representative is a lean 6 foot 1 inch and fits comfortably in the cockpit (wearing a parachute and with the rudder pedals on the second-to-last notch). A 6' 3" 185lb pilot barely fitted in the Silent Club (also with a parachute, but last pedal notch).
Related Questions

What is the max altitude under power to battery depletion for the electric self-launch Silent?

AliSport
With the standard batteries the electric self-launch Silent Club can climb to approximately 2000m (6600ft) on a charge. Most pilots will climb to a lesser altitude and shut it down in the first thermal, retaining the remainder of the charge for a save. Re-charge times are rapid and depend on the available outlet voltage (not the batteries). The Silent electric powerplant was initially developed for gliderports in Europe that have noise restrictions and are only allowed to winch launch.
Related Questions

Should I put a steerable tailwheel on my self-launch Silent?

AliSport
Before answering your question, we should point out that a fixed tailwheel is standard equipment on the pure sailplanes. The fuel-injected self-launch Silent Club, Silent 2, and Silent 2 TARGA sailplanes come standard with steerable tailwheels and wingtip wheels. A steerable tailwheel does not make much sense for the un-powered versions of the Silent or for the electric self-launch Silent Club. The glider remains in the tail-down position with a pilot on board.
Related Questions

Can I upgrade a Silent pure-sailplane to a self-launch Silent at a later date?

AliSport
The Silent Club, Silent 2, and Silent 2 TARGA can easily be upgraded to the self-launch configuration. A complete powerplant kit is available for this transformation.
Related Questions

Can I run electrical instruments off the main battery in a self-launch Silent?

AliSport
The self-launch Silent Club, Silent 2, and Silent 2 TARGA each have an engine battery (8Ah) that is charged via a flywheel generator when the engine is running. We do not recommend running instruments or avionics that draw much current from the engine battery (basic variometers are usually ok). Instead, we recommend the auxiliary battery tray option for electrical instruments, radio, GPS, Palm, transponder, etc.
Related Questions

Can you sell just the Silent self-launch engine and propeller and if so, what is the price?

AliSport
Unfortunately we cannot offer the Alisport engine and pylon for use in other aircraft. It has been specifically designed for use in the Silent self-launchers.
Related Questions

Should I install an aero-tow nose hook on a self-launch Silent?

AliSport
Maintain aero-tow proficiency (can also be interpreted as a gesture of support for your local aero-tow operation)
Related Questions

What is the L/D of a self-launch Silent with the pylon extended?

AliSport
Most self-launchers with an extended pylon and stationary propeller experience a sink rate from 2 to 3 times worse than the corresponding clean sailplane. For example, the self-launch Silent Club at 83 km/h (45 knots) with the pylon extended and the propeller at the 12 o'clock position has a sink rate of approximately 1.8 m/s (350 fpm) yielding a corresponding L/D of 13:1. For comparison, the same sink rate can be obtained with approximately 1/4 air-brake extension.
Related Questions

Are the electric self-launch Silent sailplanes available as kits?

AliSport
The electric self-launch Silent sailplanes are presently only available in ready-to-fly form. There are no plans at present to develop kits. Let us know if you are interested!
Related Questions

What is the propeller diameter of the electric self-launch Silent?

AliSport
The propeller is a two-blade folding design (folding motion is in the plane of the propeller disc) and the blades swing outward by centrifugal force. Propeller diameter is 1.92 m (75.6"). The maximum electric motor speed is 4000rpm. Best climb performance is at 3400rpm. With a belt reduction of 25:64 (1:2.56) the propeller speed during climb is approximately 1300rpm. The empty weight with batteries is typically 200 to 208kg (440 to 458lbs) depending on instruments and accessories.

How do you fly the plane and take pictures at the same time?

SkyShots Aerial Photography: FAQs
We don't! Safety is paramount and aerial photography is a two-person operation. Our pilot concentrates on maneuvering the plane in a safe manner over your property and our photographer is focused on getting that "picture perfect" image. If one person tried to do both, safety would be compromised and you wouldn't get the best possible picture.

Will I be able to get on a plane and fly home immediately after my hospital discharge?

Arizona Institute for Bone & Joint Disorders - Frequentl...
Yes. People do it all the time. You should be comfortable with your activity restrictions by the time you leave the hospital, which would include how to accommodate getting in and out of a car. If necessary, resources are available to help you with such arrangements as transportation to the airport and plane reservations.

What training do I need to fly the Silent in the US?

AliSport
For persons without a glider rating, the recommended flight training is to pursue flight lessons at any gliderport and obtain a glider pilot's license (preferably with flights in a single-seat composite glider). See the SSA website places to fly. This will legally allow you to fly the Silent. The actual transition to the Silent is straightforward. All flight characteristics are forgiving and entirely typical of the majority of sailplanes available for rent.

How many passengers fly on a plane?

Flight Maker: Flight Maker - FAQs
We restrict the number of passengers on a plane. You will very often see that "Maximum Passengers" is less than "Aircraft Seats". Comfort of all passengers is important to us. Therefore, we set the "Maximum Passengers" allowed at less than the seats on the aircraft. You may want to further reduce the "Maximum Passengers" allowed on your plane. For example, you and your spouse may only want to share a light jet with another couple (or two other people).

How fast does this plane fly?

Great Planes Giant Extra 300L Frequently Asked Questions (FA...
We don't have a specific clocked speed for the aircraft, as this is not something we would normally check for on an aerobatic airplane. It should not be flown at high speeds, and we advise against that with detail in the manual. Aerobatic aircraft, by their nature, are not designed to go fast and can easily be subjected to flutter. This is not a flaw at all but a bi-product of their light weight and exceptional performance.

Is lots of wind necessary to launch/fly/land?

Hanggliding FAQs - WikiFAQ - Answers to Frequently Asked Que...
Hanggliders can be launched, flown and landed in winds from zero to about 30 mph safely. When winds get above about 40 mph, the associated turbulence makes all aspects of flight substantially less comfortable. Generally, ideal winds for launching and landing are from 5 to 20 mph depending on the flying site. Wind speed is less important in flight since the pilot controls the air speed of the glider whatever the wind speed may be.

Will it be harmful to the eyes if I fly on a plane after the surgery ?

Abdulhadi Eye Hospital - Questions
Answer Patients are often concerned that changing pressure in an airplane can hurt the eyes after LASIK. This is not a problem. The truth is that the dryness of an airplane cabin is the greater concern. LASIK patients will need to moisturize their eyes frequently with artificial tears to prevent dryness and discomfort (perhaps every 15-30 minutes of air travel). We routinely have patients who fly the day after LASIK surgery. The eye is the most significant and precious part of our body.
