For high school and junior high school, drivers notify students of minor changes in their route. Such notification will occur for two to three days before the change occurs, unless the change addresses a serious safety concern. When there is a change in an elementary route, a written notification is sent home with students who ride the bus.

School staff are particularly attentive to helping students become familiar with their new routine during the first weeks of school. Staff will be on hand to direct students to their classes before school, and to their buses when school lets out. School buses are often color tagged to help elementary students identify them readily. But just in case, be sure your child knows how and where to reach you or somebody who could help them if they were to miss their bus after school.

Bus transportation is provided for students who live inside the Boaz City Limits. Students new to the system should call the local schools for their bus schedules.

Students attending a Broward County Public School for the first time will need to bring the following to his/her assigned school when registering: A Certificate of Immunization (HRS form 680) which is available from a private physician or the Broward County Health Department;

The lack of pigment during the development of the eye causes an abnormal development of the retina and affects the formation of the nerve pathways from the eyes to the brain, which causes decreased visual acuity or low vision that cannot be corrected to 20/20. Adults with albinism often describe their vision as lacking fine detail. Corrective lenses (i.e. glasses or contact lenses) and low vision aids (i.e. magnifiers or telescopes) can provide some clarification.

People with oculocutaneous albinism have a skin color that is lighter than others in their ethnic group. They sunburn easily (even on cloudy days). Sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least a 30 is a must for children. Consult your pediatrician regarding the use of sunscreen on an infant. A good pair of sunglasses and different types of hats will also come in handy. When spending time outside, wearing long sleeve shirts and pants, and spending time in the shade are other options.

Children’s hands and mouths are different than adults. They need to use toothbrushes designed for children. Both adults and children should use brushes with soft, rounded bristles for gentle cleaning. Change to a new brush about every three months. Wipe infant’s teeth gently with a moist, soft cloth or gauze square. As babies grow, use a child’s toothbrush with a small, pea-sized dab of toothpaste. By age 2 or 3 begin to teach your child to brush.

Most of the time cavities are due to a diet high in sugar and a lack of brushing. Limiting sugar intake and brushing regularly, of course, can help. However, it is important that your child receives a naturally balanced diet that includes the most important nutrients your child needs in order to grow. A balanced diet includes the following food groups of Meat, Fish and Eggs, Vegetables and Fruits, Breads and Cereals as well as Milk and other Dairy Products.

A bus route begins when a bus leaves a point (home, school, etc.) empty and proceeds on a predetermined route, picking up pupils and then traveling to a school(s) until the bus is empty; and returning the pupils to a designated point after school (5 CSR 30-261.010 (5)(A)(3)). These routes are required to be approved by the local board of education by the end of October and any revisions to the routes by the June board meeting.

Students who live within two miles from their schools not provided transportation services as per Florida Rule 6A-3.001 (3) A reasonable walking distance for any student who is not otherwise eligible for transportation pursuant to Section 236.083, Florida Statutes, is any distance not more than two (2) miles between the home and school or one and one-half (1.5) miles between the home and assigned bus stop.

Bus transportation begins the first day of school and is provided to elementary students living one and one half (1.5) miles, more or less, from the school they attend, and secondary (middle school and high school) pupils living two (2) miles, more or less, from the school they attend. Letters are being sent to parents/guardians of eligible students with the information on bus pick up location and pick up time.

The school bus keeps children – and the environment – safe. By providing convenient transportation for millions of school children, school buses reduce the number of cars that would otherwise be on the road. The school bus helps parents save money on gasoline, reduces traffic congestion (especially around school walking zones, where our children are most vulnerable) and also reduces the nation’s dependence on oil.

Bus service, both to and from school, is provided for students living more than two miles from the school or for those having to cross a designated hazardous street/road. At the August orientation, you will receive a schedule if your child is eligible for bus transportation. You are strongly encouraged to allow your child to ride the bus if he or she is eligible beginning the first day of school. Most Howard students love riding the bus!

Each year during August enrollment, district students receive their bus assignments. Additionally, our Transportation Department notifies families by mail whenever a change to that bus route occurs. If you have questions about bus departures and arrivals as well as location of district bus stops, contact the Transportation staff directly at 413.5200. District high schools have streamlined their student transportation by using direct bus routes.

Pass the knowledge and skills test for obtaining a CDL with passenger (P) endorsement (for vehicles that transport 16 or more including the driver) or a Class E (For Hire) license for vehicles that transport 15 or less including the driver. Pass a driving skills test in a school bus of the same vehicle group as the school bus applicant will drive. Take your written and skills test results to the local license bureau to apply for a new CDL or Class E license with an S endorsement.

Registration materials are available at the Enrollment & Residency Office. Once your registration is complete, you will be notified of the date and time to report to the school site for testing and/or scheduling of classes. Complete and return the Student Registration Packet to the Enrollment & Residency Office. This packet (3 pages) includes: 1) Student Registration Form and 2) Emergency and Health Information Form Proof of Residence documentation.

Call the school or visit the Public Affairs Office where you can view a copy of the Florida School Report. These reports show how schools compare in areas such as class size, annual expenditures, school safety, test scores, teacher education and experience. Bus transportation is not available in the Highland School District for Pre-K students. In Edwardsville, usually only children who attend Early Childhood Special Education classes get bus transportation. Pre-K students are rarely approved for bus transportation.
