Astigmatism is a common vision condition. It's caused when the front surface of the eye, called the cornea, is not perfectly round. As a result, light is focused differently in the eye, leading to blurred vision. Contact lenses that correct astigmatism are called torics, and they come in both soft and gas permeable contact lens materials. In addition, small amounts of astigmatism may be corrected with a regular, non-toric gas permeable contact lens.

Part of swimming is being okay if water ends up in one's eyes. It is recommended that beginner swimmers attend lessons without goggles until they are in a Seals class (preschoolers) or Level 3 (grade school) or until they are comfortable going under water without goggles. In cases where eye irritation is extreme, goggles are welcome at any level.

The second option is monovision. Here you give up some distance vision and some reading vision and in exchange you have one pair of lenses only. This can be dangerous, as you loose depth perception and that can cause accidents. There are modified monovision techniques that incorporate a third lens for distance or sports or the use of a bifocal contact for one of the eyes depending on personal needs. The last option is the use of bifocal contact lenses.

It is strongly recommended that people who wear contacts lenses remove them before tanning. Although eyewear will protect the eyes and lenses from ultraviolet damage, the heat may dry out the lens and irritate the eye.

Most patients will not need to wear contacts after surgery, but as long as the curvature of the cornea is within a normal range, there should be little difficulty wearing contacts after surgery.
