Undesired blood clotting in veins, especially of the calf and pelvis. It is not completely preventable, but preventive measures will be taken, including:

Theoretically anyone can get a DVT after any surgical procedure. However, the risk of DVT after EVLT is very low (less than 1 in 400).

A: This refers to the formation of a thrombus (blood clot) within a Deep vein, commonly in the thigh or pelvis. This can result in two serious consequences. If the thrombus partially or completely blocks the flow of blood through the vein, blood begins to pool and build up below the site, which can lead to chronic swelling and pain. The second consequence which can result is if the thrombus breaks free and travels through the veins, it can reach the lungs where it is called a pulmonary embolism.

Because a DVT originates on the operating table, we begin therapy before a patient enters the operating room. We treat patients both with sequential leg compression stockings and a blood thinner. Both of these therapies continue throughout hospitalization. The third major preventive measure involves getting the patient mobilized and out of bed as soon as possible after the operation, to restore normal blood flow in the legs.

Your doctor will obtain a medical history and examine you to determine if you have deep vein thrombosis. Duplex ultrasound is the most common test used to diagnose deep vein clots. It uses sound waves to evaluate the flow of blood in your veins. A gel is put on the skin of the leg. A handheld device is placed on the leg and passed back and forth over the affected area. This device sends sound waves from the leg to an ultrasound machine. A computer then turns the sounds into a picture.

Preventing deep vein thrombosis depends on whether you have had a clot before or if you are at risk for developing a deep vein clot but never had one. If you have never had a deep vein clot, but are in a situation that may increase your risk, be sure to: Get out of bed and move around as soon as you are able after having surgery or being ill. The sooner you move around the less chance you have to develop a clot.

Anticoagulants (sometimes called blood thinners) decrease your blood's ability to clot. They are used to stop clots from getting bigger and to prevent a blood clot from forming. Anticoagulants do not break up blood clots that have already formed. Your body's natural system will dissolve the clot. Anticoagulants can either come as a pill (warfarin) or as an injection or shot (heparin). Heparin and warfarin may be given at the same time.

Generally, DVT is caused by a combination of sluggish blood flow through vessels and the tendency of blood to clot resulting from a variety of conditions. Some of the conditions which result in poor circulation include heart attack, varicose veins, inactivity and prolonged bedrest. Blood clots can then form and are generally found within a deep vein in the thigh or calf.

There are things you can do to prevent deep vein thrombosis. Many doctors recommend that you wear compression stockings during a journey longer than 8 hours. On long flights, walk up and down the aisle hourly, flex and point your feet every 20 minutes while sitting, drink plenty of water, and avoid alcohol and beverages with caffeine.

Venous insufficiency is an abnormal circulatory condition with decreased return of blood from the leg veins up to the heart, with pooling of blood in the veins. Normally, stop valves in the veins close to keep blood from flowing downward with gravity. When the valves in the vein become weak and don't close properly, they allow blood to flow backward, or reflux.

Your risk for deep vein clots increases if you have several risk factors at the same time. For example, a woman with an inherited condition for clotting who also takes birth control pills has an even higher risk to have a blood clot.

The current thinking is that mild exercise during long flights may prevent the condition. In addition, experts recommend that air travelers avoid alcoholic beverages immediately before and during flight.

The risk appears to be associated with long haul flights (any flight more than 2 hours duration) where passengers are seated and immobile for long periods of time. Research is in progress into how many people develop DVT during long haul flights and how this can be avoided.
