If there are children under 6 years old in the household and you are interested in adopting a dog under 4 years old, you must have a fenced-in yard. Retrievers can be big, bouncy, and mouthy dogs, and can unintentionally hurt small children. A fenced in yard allows a "time-out" space for a dog that really needs to run and play. If you are interested in an older dog, fencing requirements are determined on a case-by-case basis.

If you live in a town or city and you don't have a fenced yard but meet all of our other adoption standards, we would encourage you to put up an enclosed dog run in the yard. This way the dog can still get fresh air without having to be tied up. If you live in the country, a fenced yard isn't a requirement as long as you don't live near a busy road. However, our policy does require that any dog you adopt from us must be a house pet and be treated as a "member of the family".

We rarely place an Airedale in a home without a fenced yard. If you believe your circumstances are extraordinary, contact your nearest Airedale rescue volunteer with the details. Having a fenced yard does not mean that you should stick your dog in the yard and expect him to take care of himself! Airedales need to be members of the family and need you to actively exercise them. Airedales left too long alone in a fenced yard become bored and get into trouble.

NEARR does not require your dogs to be spayed or neutered. However, NEARR strongly recommends that you spay or neuter your pet as it decreases the number of homeless animals born each year and can prevent certain types of cancer.

We will not place any dog who was originally a stray in a home with children. We will place a dog who was surrendered by his/her owner and was known to be good with children, in a home with children. The NEARR dog must be of suitable size, energy level and temperament for the age/size of your children. No. Many of our dogs would be perfect fits for apartment living. It just depends on the dog. When you contact us and apply to adopt, we will let you know which of our dogs would be best for apartment living.

Though not all rescue groups ask this, it's an important question for you to ask yourself. Without a securely fenced yard, you must take your dog out at least four times a day to relieve him/herself, plus exercise walks. At the same time, even with a fenced yard, the dog will need exercise and attention from you every day (plus yard clean up).

A fenced yard or not is not really the issue with Sams - the issue is that they are not stay-at-home dogs and therefore must be safely confined somewhere while you are away. Foster Homes: Georgia state law requires certain standards, the most important of which is that all dogs adopted from a public shelter must be spayed or neutered. With very rare exceptions, a dog you adopt from a Purebred Rescue foster home will already have had the procedure when you get it; if it has not, the operation must be performed within a period of thirty days from the date of the adoption.

We got into Sheltie Rescue (see Melody's story on our Success Stories page) because we were asked to help pay for the medical care incurred by a Sheltie who was horribly injured when she was hit by a car. Dogs who are outside and unrestrained are far too likely to be injured by cars, by other dogs, or even by cruel people passing by. All homes that adopt from Sheltie Rescue of Utah are required by contract to have a fully fenced yard and for the fence to be in good repair.

You can come to our training sessions and watch, and at least one of our members will be happy to show you the basics. However we can't let you fence without proper training, so if you want to actually fence you'll have to join up and take some lessons.
