Roundworms are the most common intestinal parasite of pets and the most likely to be transmitted to humans. Humans can accidentally ingest infective worm eggs that have been passed through the pet’s feces and left in the environment. The eggs hatch in the human’s intestinal tract, and the immature worms travel to various tissues in the body, including the eyes and brain, causing serious infections.

There are a number of intestinal worms that can infect dogs and cats, and they vary according to the species. In general, these include tapeworms, roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms, and they are very prolific. In fact, one worm can produce more than 100,000 eggs per day, which are then passed in the pet’s feces and spread throughout the area the pet roams. Once in the environment, these eggs can remain infective and present a health risk for your pet and to humans for years.

Rarely will heartworms infect humans as humans are an aberrant host. However, human cases of heartworm infection have occurred, causing cysts in lungs or eyes.

Dogs and cats are most commonly infected when they ingest (eat) intestinal worm eggs that have been passed through the feces of an infected dog or cat. Tapeworms can be transmitted to pets that ingest fleas or other intermediate hosts, such as small rodents, that carry tapeworm larvae. Some worm species can be transmitted to puppies and kittens through the mother’s placenta and milk.

While it is unusual for people to get influenza infections directly from animals, sporadic human infections and outbreaks caused by certain avian influenza viruses and pig influenza viruses have been reported. These sporadic human infections and outbreaks, however, rarely result in sustained transmission among humans.

Your puppy will have been wormed regularly prior to your buying it at 8 weeks. It is best to consult your local veterinarian who is aware of conditions in your area (as there are many types of worms), however as a basic guide: Puppies should be wormed at 12 weeks, 4 months and then bimonthly, and Adults (from 12 months) every 3 months.

Certain parasites, such as tapeworms, are visible to the naked eye, but others must be detected under the microscope. If you will bring in a stool sample we will be glad to examine it microscopically to see if your pet has worms.

We say this because a lot of people have purchased the wrong breeds of worms and do not have the correct information for processing dog and cat poo and this can result in serious problems. The result of using incorrect worm composting systems to dispose of cat and dog poo can be bad odours and dangerous levels of disease pathogens resident in the composted material. There can also be uneaten dog poo in the end product and this may even still have dog worms in it.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology there are over 40 different types of mites that can affect humans. Some of these mites can burrow under the skin similar to the scabies mite. These mites come from birds, rats, mice, and other animals. Some can come from house plants and dirt such as collembola or sprintails. For more information on collembola or sprintails click here. Hookworms (Ancyclostoma, Uncinaria). The national shelter parasite study1 showed that 20% of shelter dogs were shedding hookworm eggs, making hookworms the most common intestinal parasite of dogs in the U.S. It has often been thought that dogs develop considerable resistance to hookworms as they grow older, but this study showed that hookworms are just as common in older dogs as they are in puppies. Hookworms are nearly twice as common in the Southeastern U.S.

However, limited shelter resources often necessitate compromises that are less than ideal.
