The UI Hospitals admitted over 27,000 patients and there were over 856,000 clinic visits in the past year alone. There were 1,600 babies born at the hospital and 6 heart transplants last year. The UI Hospitals and Clinics is a teaching hospital that is funded by patient funds (including insurance funds) like most other hospitals in Iowa. It receives state funding to underwrite a portion of the training of Iowa physicians and to care for patients who qualify for state support.

Yes we do. Patients drive from a few hours away, others fly across the country to visit our clinic. We accommodate these patients by extending their treatment length, so they will need to return less frequently. We will also coach our patients on how to maintain their health so we won’t need to see them as often.

From July 2006 to June 2007 The Center treated 1060 different patients of all SES, cultural and work and family levels. The same patient may come to treatment multiple times during the week. The Center provides around 200 sessions a week of treatment.

Yes. Most experts believe that vaccinated fire fighters can safely treat patients as long as they are following instructions for site care. There was one recommendation from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) which did recommend attempting to avoid allowing vaccinated fire fighters from treating unvaccinated patients.

Patients with a history of herpes may be treated with LHE after completing a course of Zovirax, and only with physician consent.
