If your child has been prescribed a medication by his/her doctor that needs to be taken during the school day, please notify the school immediately to fill out the appropriate paperwork. This also pertains to any type of medication that may be prescribed for mild or severe allergic reactions. Your child is NOT permitted to carry prescription drugs on campus. Any prescription drugs will be held in the Nurse's office to be given out only at the prescribed time or when necessary.

Most likely yes. Much depends on where your child falls on the spectrum, but with your support, as well as that of doctors, therapists and teachers, your child should be able to attend school. In fact, it's his right: According to the Individuals with Disabilities Act of 1990, which mentions autistic children specifically, your child deserves access to a “free and appropriate” education funded by the government, whether it be in a mainstream or special education classroom.

Most schools have a no-nit policy to control head lice outbreaks. Generally, when you have completed one pediculicidal treatment & one olive oil treatment (or two olive oil treatments) and a thorough nit combing and manually removed all nits, you can send your child back to school. At this point, there should be nothing left on the head that is capable of moving onto another head. However, this does not mean your child is lice free.

Orientation Evening / Curriculum Night is held as part of the first Family Meeting. Parents meet with teachers in the classroom to discuss the year's curriculum. Family conferences are scheduled twice a year, and twice yearly parents receive a report describing their child's progress. Children in the 4th & 5th grades may bring their bicycles to school only if the following conditions are met: Bicyclists should also be instructed NOT to ride through the parking lot or on the playground. If the regulations are not observed, bicycle privileges will be suspended.

In the absence of fever, use your discretion. If a child is frequently coughing and sneezing, he/she may feel more comfortable at home. Please reinforce good hand washing habits. No, children with fever should stay at home. Giving a medication may reduce the fever for a few hours, but the child is still sick and likely contagious, exposing staff and classmates to illness. The medication will wear off, the fever will return, and the nurse will be calling the parent to pick up the sick child.

Your dietitian will help you plan meals that can go to school with your child. Tuna, egg, or chicken salads are easy to carry in small plastic containers. Warm or chilled food can be carried in a small cooler or insulated bag, or wrapped in foil. There are many celebrations at school that involve food. It's very important for all the teachers and aides to know that your child cannot have the same treats that the other children get.
