Students are placed on academic probation if their cumulative grade point average is below 2.0 (C average) or if 50% or more of their total units are recorded on their college transcript as W (withdrawal), I (incomplete), or NC (no credit). The Counseling Department has developed the Student Success Program to assist those who have been placed on academic probation.

First-year/New Transfer Students: If a student fails to earn a 2.0 GPA in the first semester of attendance, a letter will be sent stating that the student is on Academic Probation. To be removed from probation, the student must attain BOTH a 2.0 Shepherd University and cumulative GPA (includes course work attempted from other institutions). To continue at Appalachian in good academic standing, a student must earn, as a minimum, the following cumulative GPA's at the end of each semester indicated: If a student fails to earn the GPA indicated above at the end of the assigned semesters, they will be automatically placed on a semester of academic probation for the semester that follows. No. Information about grades and academic standing is sent directly to students. You can, of course, ask your student to keep you informed about his academic performance, and you can gain immediate access to his academic records through the use of a parents' "PIN." See the answer to Question 10.

We hope that your son or daughter will tell you if they are experiencing academic difficulties, but in accordance with FERPA (Federal Educational Rights & Privacy Act) we do not notify parents. An email is sent to each student on probation and a certified letter is sent to each student on suspension. Teachers commencing employment with the Department of Education, Training and the Arts will be subject to a probationary period of 8 months from commencement. The probationary period assists the Department to understand the skills, knowledge and abilities of the teacher and provide support in areas identified as requiring further development.
