If we have had snow or ice, the country roads can be covered even if the main roads have been plowed and are open. Most of the cabins are on country roads, except those that are in town, and are sometimes tricky to maneuver in the winter. It would be advisable to have all wheel drive or four wheel drive if the weather has been bad or if they are predicting bad weather.

We recommend four wheel drive in the winter if you have it available, just because all of our roads and drives are very hilly and curvey. The only cabins where you will NEED four wheel drive are Bearadise Cove (#8), American Hollow (#9), and Trail Ridge (#10).

If there is inclement Winter weather then yes, we would recommend that you consider bringing a 4-wheel drive vehicle. The various cabin driveways are all gravel drives and are well-maintained, but with much snow or ice they can get a little slick and/or bumpy. When the weather is fine, you should have no problem reaching your cabin with a 2-wheel drive vehicle.

A four-wheel drive (and/or tire chains) is recommended in the winter from November thru March, otherwise, a high clearance two-wheel drive vehicle is recommended for the forest road.

The roads from Durban and Johannesburg are exceptional, safe and well maintained. You don't really need a 4x4 unless you are thinking about going to Lesotho or driving specific 4x4 trails.

Under most travel conditions you do not need four-wheel drive to drive to New Mexico's ski areas. All New Mexico ski areas are located on paved, all-weather state highways that receive priority maintenance during snow storms. Road crews plow and sand these highways 24 hours a day during inclement weather. We have found that front-wheel drive vehicles with good tires, driven with some common sense, do fine on snowy roads.

Variable! Come prepared to ski every type of snow. Typically the snow is very firm in the morning. The snowcats usually groom the race lanes in the early evening hours, then it freezes overnight for ideal ski & snowboard racing conditions. As the morning progresses and it warms up, the snow softens. On the race lanes, the coaches will spread salt on the courses to keep the snow firm.
