The first dog to be shown as a GSD in the United States was a bitch named Mira v. Offingen (Beowulf x Hella v. Schwaben), in 1906. They can stay outdoors during most climatic conditions, with a good dog house for protection from the elements, and plenty of water in all seasons. If you attend an intensive course you will complete one level in two months. Students who complete certain levels successfully can skip half a level or a level after having consulted their German teacher.

Students entering the program with a B.A. or equivalent degree can usually complete all of the course work for the Ph.D. within three years (6 semesters). Completion of the comprehensive examination and dissertation can take an additional 2-3 years. Most students entering the program with a previously-earned M.A. will require only 3-4 years to complete the Ph.D.

As with any large dog, socialization and basic obedience training is essential to having your own canine good citizen.
