When we do a flea treatment in the shop we are only taking care of the fleas that are presently on the pet. The environment in which the dog lives has to be treated also. Our recommendation is to treat your house and yard organically. Check out The Dirt Doctor.

More than likely, if your pet has an infestation, it is due to a flea problem in your pets immediate environment. Once a flea population has been established in your house hold there is no quick fix to the problem. First things first, get rid of the fleas ON your pet. The veterinarians here can prescribe a one time medication (Capstar) that will kill most of the fleas that are on your pet, but it only lasts 4-6 hours.

We do administer Biospot?, a topical flea & tick treatment, to all dogs upon arrival. This treatment is effective for 45 days and would not need to be re-applied if your dog was returning within that time. We do make exceptions if can you can show a receipt that your dog is being treated by your vet, if your dog is a puppy under four months, or has health problems. Yes, but only when the fleas jump off of the pet into the carpet. However, some types of fleas will stay on the pet and seldom jump off. Only regular care of the pet will insure it will stay flea free. There are literally thousands of products on the market that claim to kill or control fleas on your pets. Our customers have had excellent results with Frontline Plus, Frontline and Advantage. These products are labeled for safely controlling fleas on dogs, cats, puppies and kittens.

Fleas and ticks have different life cycles than other targeted species. During certain phases of this life cycle they do not succumb to treatments, so we have to “catch” them between these dormant cycles in order to attain management. Two treatments are required for fleas and three treatments for ticks in order to gain control.

If your dog's fleas laid eggs on the floor, or another pet in contact with yours has fleas, this can constantly re-infect your dog. Use a long lasting product on your dog, treat in-contact animals and treat your floors to solve the problem. See our Flea Factsheet for more info.

FLEA STOPPERS works by dehydrating and kills fleas in two stages of the life cycle. Flea larvae, which hatch from the eggs, ingest the material and because it is a dessicant, it causes them to become constipated because there is not enough moisture to move their bowels. Consequently, they are poisoned by their own wastes and die, never developing into an adult flea. The adult flea is also killed by the dehydrating action of the granules.

Fleas develop within a complete lifecycle. This means they go through four stages of development: egg, larva, pupa and adult. The eggs are mainly picked up by vacuuming, the larva and adults are killed off by the initial chemical application. The cocoon which surrounds the pupa completely protects the flea from chemical exposure. The pupa can detect the presence of a host from inside the cocoon and will emerge as a biting adult.

We require that all dogs attending daycare be on year round flea preventative. While it is unlikely that your dog will get fleas while at daycare, there is always a possibility anytime your dog is exposed to other animals. If your dog is on flea preventative and is exposed to a dog with fleas, you won’t have to worry about having a problem at home. Flea preventative is for your protection.

Depending on where you live, heartworms and fleas can be a year round problem. Heartworms are spread from one dog to another through mosquitoes. If mosquitoes are a year round problem in your area, then heartworm infection must be continued. Fleas are also a year round problem in some areas. Even though your dog may be an "inside" dog, insects can be almost anywhere. Mosquitoes can fly almost anywhere, and fleas can easily be carried into the house and can quickly get out of control.

adult flea must be present on your dog for at least 24 to 36 hours before it can lay eggs. Research indicates that FRONTLINE will kill your dog's fleas within 24 hours of application--before the fleas can lay eggs.

Female adult fleas lay their eggs on pets, carpets and furniture. These eggs hatch into a small worm like larvae. Flea larvae feed on the organic powder and die! They never reach the adult flea stage. The powder also kills any adult fleas that come in contact with the powder in the first 4 to 6 days. The powder is designed to kill any fleas that are brought into the house by pets. However, pets need to be treated on a regular basis to insure they are flea-free.

Other spot-on products kill only one life stage. Scratchex® Dog Stripe-On® Flea and Tick Control kills flea eggs, larvae, and adults. Since the eggs are killed, fleas will not develop into biting adults and the life cycle is broken.

Fleas, in the New Jersey area, come around from April to October. There are more fleas about 10 days after it rains. If your dog has fleas, you have to take a multiple step approach to treating them, as a flea bath won't do it all. If you see one flea, assume there are 10 you don't see. If your dog has fleas, so does your yard, house and car. While your dog is getting a bath, bomb your house, and wash all your dog's bedding, taking it to a laundry mat is suggested.

Get a proprietary flea treatment for your pet from a vet. Look for any signs of flea presence in the house (see Fleas).  Your house may need to be fumigated. It's possible, but if so you cannot remove them yourself as they are a protected species. Contact us for more advice.

Yes. Since the majority of tapeworm infections in dogs are caused by infected fleas, a dog with fleas may also have tapeworms. It is important therefore to treat the dog and its environment with flea control products like Bio Spot ®.

We maintain a strict regimen for pest control. Unfortunately, it is impossible to exterminate all fleas and ticks, especially because many grooming dogs arrive in need of flea baths. Effective June 1, 2006 all boarding dogs must have Frontline Plus or Advantix applied in our presence! If you've previously applied or you use a different brand, your dog will be given a Capstar tablet to immediately kill any fleas & will be examined for ticks. There is a $6.00 per dose charge for Capstar.

Although nearly all adult fleas present will be controlled by the time you return home, don’t be alarmed if you see some fleas for 10 days to 2 weeks following treatment. These are newly hatched fleas which were previously pupa that are unaffected by the treatment because of their chemically-resistant covering. The residual applied will eventually control these new fleas.

If your itch was halted by using Zanfel, it did work! One of two things may be happening: You may simply be recontaminating yourself. (Read on for details.) Alternatively, Zanfel works topically (at the skin level). It is possible that the urushiol has penetrated the skin and entered the lymphatic or blood system, causing a systemic reaction. In either case,SEE YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY.

Discard it. Please let us know right away, and we will investigate. If no one else had a problem--or if you find that only one of your jars did, while the others were okay--there was likely a problem with the sanitation of that particular jar. You should review your cleaning procedures.

Keep in mind that this system serves as therapy for minor discomfort; it is not a miracle drug or pain killer and is not intended to replace medication prescribed by your physician. Though we'd like everyone to be able to stay as long as they'd like, our housing is limited during the summer. Often times, a new program begins the same day one ends and 200 new campers arrive. We are sorry, but we will have a bed for you only as long as you are registered as a camper.

Don't waste your money. Flea collars didn't work 25 years ago when that was all we had, and they STILL don't work. I've seen many dogs with flea collars that were infested with fleas. Talk to your vet to find out what he/she recommends for getting rid of fleas and ticks. Fleas don't usually live on the dog, they live in carpets, they live on furniture, bedding, and lawns.

Although the vast majority of improvement usually occurs within the first two weeks of treatment, dogs may experience additional improvement up to 28 days after initiating therapy. Therefore, if your dog does not have side effects from Zubrin® tablets and is not experiencing severe pain, you may want to continue giving your dog Zubrin® tablets for one month and then re-evaluate.

Hedgehog fleas are host specific, which means they will not usually live on any animal other than a hedgehog. Not all hedgehogs have fleas.

Daily inspections of your dog for fleas and ticks during the warm seasons are important. There are several new methods of controlling flea infestations and tick control many of which offer very high levels of protection.
