HRTP is open to currently enrolled as matriculated undergraduate, graduate, and professional students in a degree program at an accredited college or university. Recent graduates are not eligible unless they will be enrolled as matriculated student in a degree program at an accredited institution. (i.e. If a student is graduating from college in May 2007, s/he is only eligible if matriculated in a degree program in Fall 2007.) Applicants must be in good academic standing.

Academic and nonacademic qualifications are considered in the selection process. Selection for admission is based on the sum of two scores: an objective score which comprises approximately 60-70 percent of the final calculation and a subjective score which comprises the remainder. The objective evaluation is based on scholastic achievement and standardized test scores. Official transcripts of college course grades are examined to determine scholastic achievement.

Academic record, research experience, research publications, proof of English proficiency, etc. Distribution of students over different areas of research is also a consideration.

Admissions is based on superior undergraduate performance (especially in math, science, and/or engineering), scores of the General Test of the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) and three letters of recommendation. The most essential document for the selection is the portfolio of each applicant. The portfolio should show representative examples of design work (academic and/or professional), publications, awards, etc. that you consider most relevant. The Panel members assess the applicant's work, focussing on aspects such as consistency and potential for further development. Another crucial criterion for selection is the written proposal, which must be clear and well argued.

The evaluators are looking for convincing evidence that the applicant will pursue a pioneering approach to a problem of relevance to biomedical or behavioral research. They will also assess whether alternative funding is already available to pursue this direction and whether there is compelling justification for the advantage of using the NDPA process rather than the standard peer review process. Senior fellows, postdocs, and faculty who are just starting out in their careers will receive highest priority. Applications that provide a clear commitment to a career in clinical or basic research will be reviewed positively. A strong letter of nomination indicating commitment on the part of the Department Chair to support the candidate's research career will be very important in producing a strong application. The criteria that determines preliminary eligibility is as such: the female partner must be under age 38 at the time of the egg retrieval(s), the female can not have had a previously unsuccessful in-vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle, the female Body Mass Index (BMI) must be under 30, and her Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) test under 10. If you meet these criteria, you are eligible to enter the program and begin the prescreening process.
