The military, and the government in general just loves acronyms. HERE is a good place to see what they mean.

There are many abbreviations, specialized terms and acronyms the Division uses in documents regarding the prevention and cleanup of hazardous materials. Please refer to our Glossary/Acronyms webpage to see definitions for commonly used terms and acronyms.

MARC is the acronym for MAchine-Readable Cataloging. It defines a data format that emerged from a Library of Congress-led initiative that began nearly forty years ago. It provides the mechanism by which computers exchange, use, and interpret bibliographic information, and its data elements make up the foundation of most library catalogs used today. MARC became USMARC in the 1980s and MARC 21 in the late 1990s.

Risus is Latin for "laughter." Since Risus is designed primarily as a "universal comedy system," it seemed to suit, since it's short and simple and easy to remember. Very early versions of the game (circa 1988-89) had working titles like "GUCS" (Generic Universal Comedy System)! Eek. I pronounce "Risus" with an "ee" and a short "u," with emphasis on the first syllable ("REE-sus").

Sometimes it seems the computer has unleashed a severe case of acronymitis on the world. Hardly a day goes by without some new term, usually an acronym, slipping across the radar screen. People entering a new field such as photovoltaics, may experience this to an unsettling Nth degree.

RFID stands for "Radio Frequency IDentification" which is an automatic data registration technology where tiny chips are used for the tracking of products by attaching them to the products themselves or their packaging. With these little chips, the whereabouts of objects can be detected - even through a wallet, a rucksack or a bag.

CAE Online was founded in 1983 as the Corporate Asset Exchange, and changed its name to CAE Online when we created the caeonline.com web site in 1999.

DITSCAP is the acronym for DoD Information Technology Security Certification and Accreditation Process.

The acronym "TRIPS" refers to "trade–related intellectual property issues". The TRIPS Agreement is part of the GATT-WTO system. It breaks new ground because it does not deal strictly with trade in goods. It fills the IPR gap within GATT by establishing minimum levels of protection for copyrights, trademarks, geographical indications, industrial designs, patents, plant varieties, computer chip layout designs, and trade secrets.

NAMI, the Nation's Voice on Mental Illness was founded in 1979 as the National Alliance on Mental Illness. "NAMI" was officially made our corporate name in 1997, after a vote of the membership. This was done after years of discussion that the full name was not person-first language and perpetuated the very stigma we hope to erase.

CED stands for Capacitance Electronic Disc, which refers to the method used to encode the video and audio information on the disc surface. Capacitance can be defined as the ability of two adjacent conductors to store electric charge, and in the CED system these adjacent conductors are the carbon-loaded disc and the thin titanium electrode deposited on the diamond stylus.

CMB stands for Cosmic Microwave Background. It is also sometimes called the CBR, for Cosmic Background Radiation, although this is really a more general term that includes other cosmological backgrounds, eg infra-red, radio, x-ray, gravity-wave, neutrino. The CMB contains hugely more energy than any other cosmic radiation source, however, so it is the dominant component of the overall CBR spectrum. Other acronyms, such as CMBR, are also sometimes used!

SIFAT stands for Servants in Faith and Technology. SIFAT has also been known as the Southern Institute for Appropriate Technology, which is still our legal name. You can also check our staff contact page where the persons responsible for each area are listed with their email address.

It means that DoD looks to the private sector first to house its Service members. DoD believes the private sector can offer safe, secure and convenient housing to its military personnel and that the military personnel’s presence in the community is a positive influence. Therefore, DoD provides “on-base” privatized housing or military construction housing only when the private sector cannot provide adequate affordable housing.

Nursing is a profession rich with acronyms. APN stands for advanced practice nurse, an umbrella term given to a registered nurse (RN) who has met advanced educational and clinical practice requirements beyond the 2 to 4 years of basic nursing education required of all RNs. Under this umbrella fall four principal types of APNs Nurse Practitioners work in clinics, nursing homes, hospitals, or their own offices and are qualified to handle a wide range of basic health problems.

SSC or shamanic state of consciousness is a term first used by Michael Harner, author of the Way of the Shaman. SSC is another term for the ecstatic or altered state of consciousness. According to Harner it involves both a trance state and a learned state of shamanic ways and of the Otherworld. During which the shaman must be aware of what is occurring and in control of the situation, much like lucid dreaming (which will be discussed in later chapters).

CDO" is an acronym that stands for "central dense overcast". This is the cirrus cloud shield that results from the thunderstorms in the eyewall of a tropical cyclone and its rainbands. Before the tropical cyclone reaches hurricane strength (64 kt or 33 m/s), typically the CDO is uniformly showing the cold cloud tops of the cirrus with no eye apparent. Once the storm reaches the hurricane strength threshold, usually an eye can be seen in either the infrared or visible channels of the satellites.

It means "Reason for Decision," and the college debaters use that because a lot of their judges do. Like all acronyms, it is confusing and only marginally useful.

C of E stands for Church of England, the national church of the UK, of which HM The Queen is the head.

It could translate as the domain naming service or the domain name system. It is the computer action of changing domain names into numeric Internet protocol (IP) numbers which enables computers to locate web sites and e-mail.

Over its more-than-one-hundred-year history, the association has evolved from a national entity representing the interests of music products retailers to an international association including both commercial and retail members. GLAD is not an acronym. The name was chosen as a result of a poll taken my members of the group in a shopping mall in the early seventies! Interesting note: several years ago, a friend of the group, utilizing calligraphy, wrote out many of the scriptures which contain the word "glad". This framed piece now adorns the wall in the GLAD office.
