Parents and secondary teachers will no longer have a say in the accommodations their students receive in postsecondary school. Postsecondary students are treated as adults and are expected to make these decisions on their own. In some cases, disability services may keep students’ information confidential from parents. Therefore, it is important that parents and teachers help to prepare their students for the greater responsibility that will be required of them.

Research has established that there is a strong relationship between postsecondary education and successful employment outcomes. People with a postsecondary education are more likely to get a job and have a higher salary than people without a postsecondary education. This relationship is even stronger for people with disabilities. Individuals with disabilities have a much higher chance of achieving valued employment outcomes if they have a postsecondary education.

Students and parents can keep track of their grades and attendance. A student sometimes does not know he/she is in trouble in certain classes, until it is too late. Progress Reports given out in the old system, had old information by the time it got home to the parent or given to the student. Now a student knows where they stand and can do something about it before that grade goes to a report card.

The ATI requires us to have alternative format materials available at the same time they are available for non-disabled students. The alternate format conversion process is complex and time consuming. On the average, DAS needs 4-6 weeks to produce a text in alternate format. Even if DAS receives a book in electronic format from a publisher, it will likely need to be edited and converted to a format usable by a student. This is why timely adoption of text books is essential to the process.

We have a Student Assistance Center for students on Individual Education Plans (IEPs). We have full-time Vocational Special Education Coordinators and tutors who assist students with testing, homework, writing, reading, provide taped academic lessons, and scheduling. This year, we are serving 150 special needs students. English, math, science and social studies classes are modified for students with IEPs.

Yes, there are a wide variety of postsecondary education programs, including Adult and Continuing Education as well as two- and four-year degree granting colleges. Students will need to demonstrate that they meet the admission qualifications. Alternatives to a local or Regents diploma may include taking a standardized placement test at the postsecondary program and achieving a specified score. Students may also obtain a GED diploma, then apply for postsecondary study.

Some parents are blind, Deaf, have a physical disability, a psychiatric disability, or a developmental disability. Some disabilities are life-long, others are more recent. In general, there is very little reliable data on the numbers of parents with disabilities - by disability, by state, or by age of children. Most public data systems do not even gather information that identifies parents with disabilities.
