Yes, glyphtone has several variations. By default, the DataGlyph Toolkit modulates individual glyph marks as halftone marks to reproduce intensity changes. However, one can also "overlay" glyph marks over an image. For a color image, one may use either technique on all channels or just one channel (typically the blue/yellow channel). This document demonstrates the upper limits of of the "halftoning" flavor of the color glyphtone technology.
