OPOs are organizations that coordinate activities relating to organ procurement in a designated service area. Evaluating potential donors, discussing donation with family members, and arranging for the surgical removal of donated organs are some of their primary functions. OPOs are also responsible for making arrangements for the organs' distribution according to national organ sharing policies.

Organ procurement organizations have a standing ethics committee, but also regroup if necessary for a particular case. In every region there is an ethics committee for procurement. Also, every hospital has an ethics committee that meets on a case by case basis depending on the particular circumstances associated with a donor case. The national organization ( United Network for Organ Sharing - UNOS) also has a very active ethics committee.

Procurement is a term used in the government to describe the act of acquiring goods, services and construction. In the context of the PSAB, procurement equates to contracting opportunities.

The need for organs continues to grow at an alarming rate and is truly a public health crisis. There are currently more than 94,000 men, women, and children in the United States waiting for a life-saving transplant. More than 2,500 of these individuals live in the Upper Midwest. Every 13 minutes another name is added to the national waiting list, and each day 17 people die while they wait for their transplant.

Many people are asked by a loved one or a friend to be an organ donor. Others decide on their own that they wish to be organ donors. Either way, the decision should be yours alone. No one should pressure you into becoming an organ donor and the decision must be done completely voluntarily. To donate a kidney, you must be in good health and have normal kidney function and anatomy. Some people with high blood pressure, diabetes, or other health problems, may not be able to be organ donors.

There are no age limits on who can donate. Newborns as well as senior citizens have been organ donors. If you are under age 18, you must have a parent's or guardian's consent. If you are 18 years or older, you can show you want to be an organ and tissue donor by signing a donor card. You can download and print an organ donor card at www.organdonor.gov/newdonorcard.pdf. Carry the card in your wallet. In some states, you can state your intent to be an organ donor on your driver's license.

You can sign up to extend the gift of life by registering to be an organ and tissue donor on your driver's license or state ID card. Checking the box on your driver’s license or state ID card is legal authorization for donation and will ensure that your wish is fulfilled. Talk with your family about your decision so they can be prepared to support and honor your wishes.

Families who make the decision to extend the gift of life often find that donation helps them through their grieving process. Donation is something positive that can come from the death of a loved one. One person can save or enhance up to 60 lives through organ and tissue donation.

Organs and tissues can only be donated after death. Age and health criteria are evaluated on an individual basis at the time of death; everyone should consider themselves a potential organ and tissue donor.

Organ (heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, and pancreas) donation can only be done on a donor who has been declared brain dead but whose other organs are kept functioning by sophisticated hospital machinery. Because brain death is not a common occurrence, viable organ donors are rare. Tissue donation (eyes, bone, skin, veins, heart valves, tendons, etc.) can occur even after the heart has ceased beating. Most deaths are potential tissue donors (depending on a medical, social history, etc.).

With new technology and medical procedures, many lives that would have been lost ten years ago can now be saved by organ transplantation. Many of these people waiting are children, and few adult donors can donate to children. However, the number of organs donated hasn't been able to keep pace with the need - thousands of people die every year waiting for an organ donation.

Beginning in January 2007, every applicant for a Michigan driver's license or state ID will be offered the opportunity to sign up on the Donor Registry, through the Michigan Secretary of State.

U.S. patients receive an organ transplant every day, but 17 die daily waiting for an organ transplant that never comes.

Organ and tissue recovery are sterile surgical procedures wherein the body remains intact. Open casket funerals are still possible, if so desired.

All surgery can cause pain while you recover. The amount of pain depends on the type of operation you have. Your transplant team will make sure that you have the leastamount of pain and discomfort. Most organ donors feel that the pain is easier to endure because they know that they have helped someone to live a longer and healthier life.

Organs or tissues from one person (the donor) are put into another person's body (the recipient). People of all ages and backgrounds should consider themselves likely donors.

Some diseases of the kidney, heart, lung, pancreas, and liver that can lead to organ failure are found more frequently in minority women. The rate of organ donation from minority women does not keep pace with the number needing transplants. Although minority women donate, in part, to their share of the population, their need for transplants is greater. Matching donor organs to likely recipients requires genetic similarity.

To get on the list, you need to visit a transplant hospital. Every transplant hospital in the United States is a member of UNOS. You can use the UNOS directory at www.unos.org/members/search.asp to find a transplant hospital. A doctor will examine you and decide if you meet the criteria to be put on the list. You also can get on the waiting list at more than one transplant hospital. Each hospital has its own criteria for listing patients.

After a person has died, transplantable organs and tissue can be donated to help the lives of individuals in need.

Authorized hospital personnel access the registry at the time of your death to determine if you are listed and wished to be a donor. Your desires are then shared with your family so that they can make the final decision.
