When development occurs in suburban areas, homeowners will have the opportunity to be exposed to more wildlife. Apple Valley is fortunate enough to be able to coexist with our coyote population. According to the Department of Natural Resources, there are no known reports of attacks to humans in Minnesota. Normally, coyotes are more afraid of humans than we are of them. Coyotes are predators of small animals, such as rodents, squirrels and small pets.

Both deer and coyotes are quite numerous and both tend to stay in the interior grasslands, where food is more plentiful and people are fewer. The best time and place to see them is in the morning or evening along the road, Park Road 22. Campers should be aware that coyotes, while they would not normally bother people, can present a danger to pets. Please do not feed or approach wildlife.

Coyotes are anything but finicky eaters. In natural desert habitats they feast on everything from crickets and cactus fruits to quail, cottontails, carrion, and deer. It's no stretch for them to add domestic cats and small dogs to their nutritional repertoire. Bobcats, on the other hand, have more refined tastes: they eat mostly rodents, rabbits, and jackrabbits (less often birds and lizards).

Coyotes prefer carrion and small animals like rabbits, squirrels and mice. A hungry coyote that can't find food will take what it can, so we suggest you keep your small pets inside, especially at night.

Frequently seeing a coyote could mean that it is finding reliable sources of food in your neighbourhood. Sometimes people intentionally feed coyotes. Coyotes that become accustomed to people will lose their natural fear and may become aggressive leading to serious public safety concerns. Without realizing it, you may be providing coyotes with a regular food source.

Coyotes visit schoolyards for the same reason they investigate backyards and laneways; they are searching for food. This search is guided by a keen sense of smell. The smell of leftover lunches and food wrappers coming from a schoolyard's garbage container can be a powerful attractant. Children should place litter in schoolyard garbage cans that are animal-proof with secure lids. Garbage containers should be cleaned out daily, reducing odor and further preventing the attraction of coyotes.

Like many other wild animals, coyotes tend to be most active between dusk and dawn. They usually spend the day resting in their dens, under low branches of trees or any other protected area. It is not uncommon to see them at any time of the day because coyotes can adapt their daily routines, especially if they successfully find reliable food sources.
