I wanted to climb Everest to test myself. I wanted to know if I was tough enough physically and mentally to climb to the top. I wanted to know if I had the skills to do it. I also wanted to know what it would be like to stand on the top of the world.

I made Everest my goal after climbing a very difficult route (Cassin Ridge) on Mt. McKinley in Alaska. At the time, this was the most difficult climbing I had done. My climbing partner and I only planned six days for the climb-it took us eleven. When I reached the top of McKinley I felt an incredible swell of emotion. I looked around and felt like I could see forever.

It depends. The most popular is the South Col route. This is the route the first climbers Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay used when they triumphantly reached the summit. Because of the popularity of Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the continental United States, wilderness permits are required for ALL trips up the Main Mt. Whitney trail, either overnight or day hikes. The quota period for Mt. Whitney is from May 1 through November 1, at which time permits must be picked up in person from the Eastern Sierra InterAgency Visitor Center south of Lone Pine.

Climbing Mt. Kinabalu can be done in 2 days but a more comfortable climb in 3 days is recommended. It does not require special skills to do the climb at least have the basic fitness level. Park regulations stated that all climbers have to engage the services of a registered mountain guide on their climb. The summit trail is the main route taken by most climbers as it is a simpler and shorter approach.

The best season to climb Everest is during spring between March to May, preferably May since the weather is most cooperative during that time.

Even though one can climb throughout the year, January, February and September are the best months, with June, July, August, November and December also being good. Not at all. Any person in good physical condition can climb and reach the summit. You should be able to run for half an hour or more without feeling short of breath. No one with a sore throat, cold or breathing problems should go above 3000 meters.

Some tips we could give is when shopping in Kathmandu, be early because vendors will give you the best prices. Even the drugs available in Kathmandu are inexpensive and over the counter like Cipro ($1.50 or PHp77.40 for 5 days) and Diamox ($.50 or PHp25.80 for 10 days). Expect to pay at most $10,000 for permits plus food, gear & equipment expenses, oxygen, insurance and Sherpa fees. Be sure to remember the proper acclimatization rule: climb high-sleep low.

Climbing Everest is a process, not an event. For most serious climbers, Everest is just another large peak that requires more altitude experience than others before a realistic attempt can be made. No. A reasonably fit and healthy person can attempt the climb with confidence. As long as you do some regular exercise as part of your lifestyle and you are injury-free, you can reasonably expect to complete a successful climb. Of course, the fitter you are, the better. There have been incidents where climbers have become lost, injured or killed on the mountain but this has only happened when they leave the marked track in poor weather. Listen to your guide's instructions and take care at all times and you will be fine.

Mt Kinabalu and Borneo in general does have 'seasons' but in reality the weather is highly variable at all times of the year. The climate charts suggest that the best time to visit the mountain is during the dry season in March and April, with November to December being the wet season. I climbed the mountain in September and we had perfect weather. A friend was there the week before with a group and they could not even attempt the summit because of bad weather.

Elbrus is a glacier climb of easy to moderate difficulty. You need to have spent time walking with an ice axe, be familiar with self arrest and proper technique for walking on snow slopes up to 40 degrees. You will wear crampons during the ascent. If you have not been at altitude before know that 18,500 feet is high enough that you will need to pay attention to your body's ability to acclimatize. Weather is a factor on an ascent of Elbrus, as it is on any big mountain.

Yes, they do. Some think "if I can't stand on the pedals, how can I climb a hill?" Recumbents climb (and descend!) like tandems. You may climb more slowly on a recumbent, but if you keep pedaling, the scenery keeps moving. For steeper hills, most quality recumbents come with a low "granny gear" so you can spin your way to the top. Usually you can keep pace with most upright riders, and if you do lose any time climbing, you get it back on the downhill and flat ground.

This is how it broke down: 1 bottle shared with my partner at C3. 1 to climb to C4. I shared 1 at C4, the South Col during rest times. While I did not summit, I used 1 bottle going to the Balcony and back. If I had summited, I would have used another to the South Summit. then 1 to the summit and back to the South Summit.
