When is the best time to hunt in New Zealand?

Hunters Paradise
Remembering that New Zealand seasons are opposite to the northern hemisphere and our autumn (fall) is March / April. The red deer roar (or rut) is from mid March and runs to the end of April. I have heard stags roaring in mid-May but this is uncommon. The roar is the best time to hunt as stags can be called into the hunter. Failing this, anytime from mid-February to early August is best if after a stag with it’s antlers still on.

I will give you a short look at our seasons and what your expectations might be. Archery - archery combo hunts run in September with our 6 day hunts beginning on Sunday afternoon with an evening hunt and ending on Saturday after a morning hunt. When is the best time to book a tour to New Zealand?

New Zealand Information | Frequently Asked Questions
The short answer is - as early as possible. Why? Well we have Earlybird Discounts for those organised enough to book early. These discounts offer significant savings and are not available during the normal busy booking period (August-October). Another reason is that a lot of our tours to New Zealand sell out quickly. Last year we had to disappoint a lot of people because their first option was unavailable.

It varies from species to species, so it depends on what you are hunting. For the most part, our best deer hunting is typically later in the season once the browse starts to decline and the wheat fields become more active. Hog hunting is good year round, but the hotter months will see a decline in daylight movement. If you would like to discuss available hunting dates and when to book, contact us and we will go over the best available dates with you.

Hunting for the challenge and meat is very good all year round. Trophy boar hunters should consider hunts between approximately November until about April when the wild boar have their extra thick coats of fur covering them. Hunting is most challenging from July through to October due to the strong natural cover (leaves, four foot tall grass along the picturesque riverbank, etc.). Snow makes tracking very interesting in the winter and it creates an atmosphere that truly fits the occasion.
