Because of the enormous demand that email and word processing would create, the library cannot permit patrons do these functions on our computers. There are computer labs throughout campus where you can do email and word processing, and you can ask at the reference or circulation desk to find out where the nearest computer lab is.

The Library of Congress is a research library, and books are used only on the premises by members of the public. Anyone over high school age may use the collections. Yes. A library card is needed to check out books. For current students, the CGCC ID is the library card, and the number on the back needs to be scanned into the Library computer before books can be checked out. Community borrowers need to obtain a Community Borrowers library card to check out CGCC books. A card is not needed to use the computers in the library.

There are personal computers available for student use in the computer labs located on the second floor behind the Reference Desk and on the south side of the third floor next to the Silver Rare Book Room. These computers are reserved for law students and you will need a valid Law School network login password in order to use them.

Some of the computers are open access and require no special login. These are the computers on the two taller tables. The computers in the electronic classroom and on the lower tables in the library require you to login using your NetID.

Yes, USB devices can be used in the library computers (except for the catalogue-only terminals). However, the devices can only be connected by using the port at the front of the computer (just lift the flap). Not all library computers will accept all types of USBs so please try another computer if this occurs. Some USBs have a short connector so you may wish to use a USB cable.

Milne Computer Center is located directly across the courtyard from the Valley Library. Regular hours are Sunday 11-am-Friday 9pm (open 24 hours ) and Saturday from 11am - 9pm. Check their website http://scf.oregonstate.edu/ for more hours. If you are attempting to print a file from Blackboard, the File>Print method will often not work. The browser sees the file as a separate window.

Internet-accessible computers are available on the 2nd floor of the Library, and may be used for searching the Web. There are no other programs on these computers, such as Word or Excel, so you will not be able to type your papers. Computers in the Academic Technology Lab on the 1st floor of the Library building have wordprocessing and other programs on them for you to type a paper or do other computer tasks. Some databases will allow you to download searches. There is a plastic stand near each workstation which provides information about downloading on databases which have this feature. Insert a disk into the A drive and follow the instructions for your particular database.
