Garmin's map transfer protocol is secret and proprietary to them. No third party software can use it. Thus, MacGPS Pro cannot transfer Garmin's MapSource maps into Garmin receivers - only MapSource software has that ability. Because Garmin's MapSource is only available in a Windows version, a Mac user must borrow or purchase a used PC to use it. On the other hand, MacGPS Pro allows two-way transfer of Waypoints, Routes, and Track Logs with a Mac OS native application.

I created a trip file and saved it. However, when I open the file, at a later time, nothing happens. My trip directions are no longer there. How do I set a default starting point? I usually start my trips from home and it would be nice to have that as my default starting point.

This is almost certainly to do with the Garmin set to "talk" in its proprietary language, rather than the International standard language - "NMEA". So on the Garmin menu, find the interface settings menu and change from "Garmin" to "NMEA Out", also while there, set the baud to 4800 if you have this option. If your GPS is the Garmin-18 USB model, then you must download the extra file from the Garmin website. This is called spanner.

The Garmin 72 works fine with SOB. The typical problem experienced with Garmins is that they are not set by default to output NMEA data (rather they use their own proprietary language for communicating with computers and other Garmin devices). However this is simply a setting in the Garmin menu which needs to be changed. Apart from this, the Garmin will operate in the same way with SOB as does any other GPS. For full redundancy, it is an ideal setup to have a separate GPS for the laptop.

The install program on disk 1 installs everything needed for all the data disks. When you ask AllTopo to display a map which is found on another disk it will prompt you to put the correct disk in your CD reader. Copy the SETUP.EXE from the first data disk to a temporary location on your fixed drive. Run SETUP from the fixed disk. Garmin GPS units use a bridged amplifier output. Most devices use singled ended amplifiers, which means one conductor is ground, the other(s) provide the actual signal. In a bridged amplifier, there is no ground reference, both pins provide signal. Should a bridged amp be connected to a singled ended input, one pin will be grounded and will prevent the amplifier from working properly.

In order to have Freshmap mapping on your GPS, you need a GPS that is able to take a microSD card (GPS with "x" at the end of the name), and you need Freshmap for Garmin GPS which is only available on microSD card.

To make NetStumbler play a sound when a new Access Point is found, take the .wav file you want it to use and save it as ir_begin.wav in your Windows home directory (usually C:\windows or C:\winnt). This is the only sound that NetStumber can currently make -- it cannot (yet) play midi tones for different signal strengths. Marius has that on the wish list, it may make it to a future release.
