Some region 1 titles from Columbia Tristar have an encoding called 'Regional Coding Enhancement' (RCE). This will prevent the DVD from playing on some multi-region or region-free DVD players. In general, any multi-region player that has the option for you to manually choose the regional setting will not be affected by RCE. Please make sure that your player can handle this encoding before ordering, as we are unable to accept any returns due to RCE.

RCE stands for Regional Coding Enhancement (see about Charlie's Angels above). Basically (in theory !!) if you have a multi region player and insert an RCE disc, the disc can tell your DVD player is multi region and will not work, but it's not foolproof, many multi region players can actually play them. RCE discs are less common nowadays.

Region Coding Enhancement (abbreviated as RCE on our site) is the practice of additional region protection software applied to R1 DVDs to prevent them from being viewed by non-R1 machines. Currently only the Columbia and Warner studios actively pursue this policy. Encoding refers to the process of compressing .WAV files into a much smaller MP3 (or other compressed audio) format. Once you have ripped a song from your CD, you must then encode the .WAV file to an MP3 file. The file will be reduced to approximately one twelfth of its original size while maintaining it's original perceived audio quality.

Like video encoding, audio signals can also be compressed so that they take up much less space than they would normally. Although the player is able to access to Internet content, it is not designed as a typical browser, because it doesn't have the same processing power as a PC. Regional Coding enhancement (RCE) is an additional layer of protection which some studios have placed on certain DVDs to prevent them from playing on region-free or multi-region players. RCE is something completely different than region coding - It's an additional piece of programming on the DVD that checks to see if your DVD player is set to 'no region' ... if it is, it stops playing the DVD.

Recently, the Motion Picture Association of American (MPAA) has developed a new system called Regional Coding Enhancement (RCE) which will be included on almost all new region 1 DVD releases. This new technology was created to prevent some codefree DVD players from playing DVD discs purchased in North America. Currently, there is no word on whether or not this technology will be included on other regions.

R.C.E. stands for "Recommended for Community Education". NVCC has other ESL courses in its Community Education division. Different types of computer and operating system have different file structures. File encoding allows a file created on one type of computer to be converted into a convenient file format, so that it can safely be stored on another type of computer. Storing does not mean that the file can be executed or even opened successfully on a machine that can store it.

RCE is a way devised by some of the major film studies to prevent DVDs playing on players that have been modified to play DVDs from regions other then the region of purchase. In reality RCE is little more then a mechanism designed to trick you player into admitting it's not a genuine Region (X) player. In our answer to the previous question, we discussed that there are region-free DVD players that have been modified after-market by third-party vendors to evade the region code restriction. To counter that, the DVD format now includes a stricter mechanism called Region Code Enhancement.
